Vienna Marie Bender
November 25, 1942 – January 2, 2024
Vienna Marie (“Bjorklund”) Bender, 81, former resident of Newberry, Michigan and resident of Greensboro, North Carolina succumbed to dementia on Tuesday, January 2, 2024.
She was born on November 25, 1942, in Newberry, Michigan, the daughter of Edward Edwin Bjorklund and Verna Edith Jokela.
Vienna was a 1960 graduate of Newberry High School. Soon after graduation, knowing that small town life was not for her, Vienna packed up her bags and moved on to experience the city life. Her first stop was San Francisco, California for a few years then onto New York City. While in New York, she met her husband Axel Bender, and they were married on June 4, 1966. This past June 4, 2024, would have marked their 58th wedding anniversary.
Vienna was a very creative and artistic person, with a passion for fashion and interior design. To fulfill her passion, she attended the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City (where she graduated with honors) and worked for Gunne Sax making patterns for formal wear. She always said being in the fashion and interior design world were some of the best moments of her life. At home, she was always reinventing her and Axel’s space.
She also loved to travel. Always having her bags packed ready for the next adventure, she traveled the world, going to Finland, China, Dubai, Germany (to name a few places), and visited family and friends who did not live close by. When she wasn’t traveling, she also enjoyed having company over, hosting dinner parties, and trying out new recipes.
She also loved animals and being a “mama” to her beloved Boston Terriers. Her Boston Terriers (Peggy & Daisy, Frankie & Dixie, and Tessa & Bella) were her babies. She would go to the end of the earth and back for her fur babies. There was always a soft spot in Vienna’s big heart for any fur baby that crossed her path.
Survivors include her husband Axel Bender of Greensboro, North Carolina; one brother Donald Bjorklund and wife Judith of Newberry, Michigan; nieces and nephews Allan (Schanel) Bjorklund, Dani (Kendra) Bjorklund, Susan (Dan) Bamber, Kevin Bjorklund, Rachel (Eric) Nelson, Rebecca (David) Kenny, Bethany (Matt) Kaiser, Amanda (John) Alto, Josh (Jolene) Alto, and nine (9) great nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Vienna is preceded in death by her brother Allan “Matt” Bjorklund.
Vienna, you were a wonderful, caring person and will be deeply missed by those who loved you.
Cremation has taken place and Vienna’s ashes will be laid to rest at Forest Home Cemetery in Newberry, Michigan.
