The Newberry Correctional Facility (NCF) held their Community Liaison Committee meeting with community representatives and staff.
The meeting was chaired by Andy Hubble, former Deputy Warden, who was recently promoted to Acting Warden of NCF. Former Warden Don Curley is now Acting Assistant Deputy Director of the Northern Division, which covers 13 facilities in Michigan from Muskegon to Baraga. Jaron McIntyre is the new Acting Deputy Warden for Newberry.
There are nine new Corrections Officer hires, a hiring of a limited term electrician, and Taylor Pederson was hired as the new librarian.
NCF’s bed count as of August 6 totaled 1,090, which prison officials noted is close to full.
The facility recently held a Reentry United program, which provided information and resources for prisoners who have the closest release date. In September, there will also be a road restoration event by the Secretary of State for prisoners who will be paroled, providing information on getting their drivers licenses back.
In September, NCF will be represented in the Law Enforcement Torch Run by Newberry High School alumnus and standout runner Ephram Evans. The event raises funds for Special Olympics.
There are currently four dogs in the NCF dog program, and all but one are up for adoption.
The electrical infrastructure project is 60 percent complete and is expected to be finished by late 2027. The perimeter fence project is 95 percent complete and will be finished by the end of this summer.
