A 21-year-old Newberry man has been charged with murder and assault following a stabbing last Sunday evening in Newberry that left one man dead and another injured.
Damon Lamar Palmer II was arraigned Wednesday in 92nd District Court in Luce County on one count of open murder and one count of assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder, according to Michigan court records.
The charges come from an incident reported about 7:15 p.m. Sunday, July 19 in the 300 block of East John Street, according to the Luce County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies responding to the scene found a 47-year-old man who had been assaulted. They then located a 40-year-old man in the yard suffering from multiple stab wounds. Despite lifesaving efforts, the victim was pronounced dead at the scene, the sheriff’s office said.
Family members identified the victim as Jay Edward Endsley.
The second victim, later identified by authorities as Terry Endsley, was transported to a local hospital. His injuries were not considered life-threatening.
Palmer was taken into custody at the scene without incident.
The investigation remains active. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Luce County Sheriff’s Office.
Court records also show Palmer appeared in court Wednesday for a preliminary examination in a separate felony case charging him with assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder.
That case stems from an alleged assault on June 30. Palmer was arraigned on that charge July 3.
