Alice Pauline Feigel
August 3, 1927 – October 4, 2024

Alice Pauline Feigel, age 97, of Engadine was called to be with the Lord on October 4, 2024. Alice was born at her parents’ home near Engadine on August 3, 1927, to the late Julius and Pauline (Schliske) Stelter.

As a child, Alice grew up on a farm and walked to the Anderson one-room schoolhouse with her older sisters. On September 20, 1947, Alice married Raymond A. Feigel in Engadine.  She was a devoted and loving wife, mother, sister, grandmother and friend. Alice had a strong faith-filled relationship with Jesus and spent time with Him each morning with her daily devotional books. Alice loved to laugh and was happiest knowing her family and friends were around her being “well fed.” Alice found enjoyment in things such as rhubarb gardening, baking banana bread for coffee hour, VFW Ladies’ Auxiliary, Aid Association for Lutherans, and serving as Church Extension Fund representative. Alice was a lifelong member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church of Engadine, serving in many capacities over the years.

Alice was preceded in death by her husband Raymond “Ray” on April 12, 2000; infant son Larry, sisters Margaret Everhart, Mary Jane McFarland, Ruth Brown and Elaine Williams, sons-in-law Al Davis and Tim Korzen.

Alice is survived by her children, Renee Davis, Greg (Kyung-Ran) and Peggy Korzen; six grandsons, Theodore Davis, Christopher (Sarah) Davis, Andrew Feigel, David Feigel, Adam Korzen and Jason Korzen; brother Julius Stelter; special friends Sherry (Pete) Garchow and Kim (Dick) Miller.

A gathering of family and friends will take place Friday October 11, 2024 from 10:00 am to 11:00 am at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Engadine. Funeral services celebrating the life of Alice will follow at 11:00 am at the church with Pastor Kyle Kuehl officiating. Interment will take place at the Bethlehem Lutheran Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be directed to Bethlehem Lutheran Church in her loving memory.

John Carleton Gowan
March 25, 1957 – September 30, 2024

Longtime Curtis resident and businessman, John Carleton Gowan, 67, passed away peacefully Monday, September 30, 2024. The oldest of four children, John was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, uncle, cousin and great friend to many, many people. He was born March 25, 1957 in Laredo, Texas to William and Marlene Gowan. John grew up in Okemos, Michigan, and had a lifelong career with Lifetouch National School Studios. He began his career in Okemos, but soon ventured out to build offices in Grand Rapids, Clarence, New York, Harbor Springs, Michigan and Kalamazoo, Michigan, finishing his career back in Grand Rapids in 2013. Even with all of those opportunities of life and career, Curtis, Michigan was his true home.

John was a graduate of Okemos High School. Afterwards, he attended Central Michigan University, Northern Michigan University, Lake State College and Michigan State University with a major in Sales Marketing and a minor in Psychology.  While attending college he worked with his father Bill, as a Photographer and Sales Person for Lifetouch National School Studios eventually taking on the roles of Territory and Regional Manager for the same company. He also met and married the love of his life at Lifetouch NSS – Mary (Emery) in the summer of 1985.

John and Mary were married in 1986 on Mackinac Island and began their Lifetouch life and family life together. John became an instant father to Nathan with his marriage and took on the role like everything else in his life, with dedication, love, and care for others. In 1987, their son Nicholas was born and the family was complete!

John and Mary worked as a team in numerous territory and regional offices where their expertise was in growing sales and establishing great teams.  Along the way they purchased North Store in Newberry, Michigan and Harbor General Store in Harbor Springs, Michigan.  John was an entrepreneur at heart! It was a true team effort to keep all the enterprises moving forward, John, Mary, Nathan, and Nicholas all worked together in John’s business ventures. John loved to buy and sell not only businesses but found it hard to pass up a good snowmobile deal on the side of the road!

John spent his retirement between Curtis, Michigan and the Bradenton, Florida area.  He enjoyed a role on the school board at 3 Lakes Academy in Curtis and was very active in the community with Mary, leading the charge as 4th of July Parade Chairperson for 10 years.  John also served as commodore of the CCBC Boat Club while in Florida.

His love and commitment to his family shaped his life.  His charisma, kindness and loyalty will be remembered by all.  John had a passion for boating, snowmobiling, hunting, and just spending time outdoors.  He will be dearly missed.

John is survived by his loving wife of 38 years, Mary (Emery) Gowan of Curtis; sons Nicholas (Ashley) Gowan and Nathan (Lacy) Veddler, grandchildren Wyatt, Natalee, Frederick, Peter and Joevie; brothers Doug (Beth) Gowan, Brian (Anne) Gowan; sister Mary (Jeff) Liska; nephew Benjamin Liska.  Also surviving are many other loved in-laws, Sharon Emery, Jan Hose, Karen Kellogg along with multiple nieces and nephews.  He is preceded in death by his father and mother, William & Marlene Gowan.

A gathering of family and friends will take place Sunday, October 13, 2024 from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm at the Erickson Center for the Arts in Curtis.  A memorial service celebrating the life of John will follow at 2:00 pm at the Erickson Center with a family graveside interment at Woodlawn Cemetery, followed by a community luncheon at ECA for all to attend.  In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be directed to The John Gowan Family TLA Fund, in care of 3 Lakes Academy, P.O. Michael Byrne Ennis
March 10, 1939 – September 22, 2024

Former longtime Newberry resident and businessman, Michael Byrne Ennis, 85, of Grand Marais, died Sunday, September 22, 2024 at his residence.  Mike was born March 10, 1939 in Newberry, son of the late Spencer Michael and Margaret “Marge” (Byrne) Ennis. He was a 1957 graduate of Newberry High School and attended St. Gregory’s Catholic Church. Mike graduated from Central Michigan University in 1961 with a bachelor degree in business administration. During college, he worked summers at Blaney Park Resort.

Mike later married, and, in 1967, moved to Newberry to work with his father as an independent insurance agent at S.M. Ennis Agency, eventually becoming owner until his retirement in 2012. He loved staying at the family’s summer cottage on Round Lake—always riding his pontoon with the Irish flag. Mike also enjoyed snowmobiling at Camp Succotash, flying a small plane, and riding the backwoods. St. Patrick’s Day was a favorite holiday for celebrating his Irish heritage. He was a life member of the Newberry Elk Lodge #1705, and a member of the Knights of Columbus, and supported other organizations, including the Goodfellows, Pet Pals, and Seney Wildlife Refuge. Known by his call signal KA8CEO, Mike was an avid ham radio operator, and he regularly volunteered with other amateur radio operators for the annual UP 200 dog sled races.

In 2018, Mike moved to Grand Marais, where he and his companion Sara, a friendly black lab, enjoyed walks in the woods and playing ball at the beach. He loved chatting with folks in local businesses, and he regularly attended Holy Rosary Catholic Church.

Mike is survived by: son Michael C. Ennis-McMillan and his partner Saul Bachiller-Smith of Saratoga Springs, New York; son Patrick J. Ennis and daughter-in-law Kristin Fellner of St. Petersburg, Florida; and daughter Colleen “Kelly” Ennis of Escanaba, Michigan. He is survived by one granddaughter, Mikel A. Ennis (Robbie) Dyer, and her four children. He is also survived by: sister Patty Rose Ennis (Patrick) Rahilly; sister Mary Ennis Murphy; and brother-in-law Moran (Shirley) Doyle. He also has several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

In addition to his parents, Mike was preceded in death by: former wife Bunny Ennis of St. Petersburg, Florida; son James D. Ennis; sister Kathleen Ennis Doyle; brother-in-law Joe Murphy; brother-in-law Donald R. McMillan; aunts Chan Ennis Monroe and Katie Ennis; and uncles Frank Ennis and Patrick Ennis.

Per Mike’s wishes, cremation was handled by Beaulieu Funeral Home, Newberry. Family and friends will hold a burial ceremony at Forest Home Cemetery, Newberry Michigan.

Per request, cremation services were accorded. A Memorial Mass celebrating the life of Mike will be held Thursday, June 19, 2025 at 2:00 pm at St. Gregory’s Catholic Church with Fr. Jacek Wtyklo officiating. Rite of Committal will follow at Forest Home Cemetery.
