Mary Ellen Walker
May 17, 1937 – March 20, 2023

Former Naubinway resident, Mary Ellen Walker, 85, of Newberry, passed away peacefully Monday morning March 20, 2023, at Helen Newberry Joy Hospital in Newberry.

Mary was born to the late Earl and Merle (Baker) Powers on May 17, 1937, in Vinton, Iowa. She loved the outdoors and especially liked to play golf and go fishing in Michigan’s beautiful Upper Peninsula, where she resided for many years with her late husband, Ron, at the Hiawatha Sportsmen’s Club in Naubinway. Mary was a wonderful cook and loved collecting and sharing her many recipes. She had a quick and witty sense of humor and a sunny, positive disposition.  She was a loving, giving person who was beloved by all who knew her.

Mary leaves behind her children David (Debra) Butler of Rapid City, Brian Butler of Gould City, Diane (Ed) Stonebreaker of Lapeer, Randy (Paula) Walker of Burton, and Darlene (Bob) Tadazak of Lapeer; 11 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.  She also leaves behind many dear friends who made her years living at the Hiawatha Club some of the happiest in her life.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Ronald Walker; sisters Helen Fisher and Shirley Henson; brothers Richard Marion, Emmett, and Melvin Powers; son Dale Walker; special sister-in-law Linda Turrell.

A private interment and memorial service will be held at Flint Memorial Park in Mt. Morris, Michigan, at a later date to be announced.

The family would like to thank the staff at the Newberry Assisted Living Community for their loving care and devotion to Mary during the past few years of her life, with special thanks to Tracy and Tim for always being there for her.

Kay Margaret Oberle
January 2, 1953 – March 9, 2023

Kay Margaret Oberle, 70, of Gould City, died Thursday afternoon March 9, 2023 at her residence.

Born January 2, 1953 in Newberry, daughter of the late Kenneth and Dorothy (Rushton) Foster, Kay was a 1971 graduate of Newberry High School.  Kay was formerly employed at Helen Newberry Joy Hospital, the Luce County Sheriff’s Department, Tahquamenon Falls Brewery and also as a babysitter.  Kay deeply loved Jesus and was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Newberry, enjoyed playing bingo and spending time with her grandchildren.  Kay was loved by many and always willing to help her family and friends anyway she could.

Kay is preceded in death by her father Kenneth Foster and mother Dorothy Minier, husband Albert “Jack” Oberle, daughter Kylie Oberle and sister Patricia Teske.

Survivors include her children James (Terri) Oberle of Newberry and Kaylie (Cody Anderson) Oberle of Gould City; grandchildren Darian, James, Breah, Kaimee, Kyson and Amara; great-granddaughter Rylie; brother Ken (Ngat) Foster of Durham, N. Carolina and brother-in-law Gary (Kay) Teske of McMillan; many nieces and nephews.

Graveside services, to be scheduled, will be held in the spring of 2023 at Forest Home Cemetery in Newberry.

Cecile Alice Whiskin
September 17, 1949 – March 15, 2023

Lifelong area resident, Cecile Alice Whiskin, 73, of McMillan, died Wednesday morning March 15, 2023 at her residence in the presence of her loving family and the care of Schoolcraft Memorial Hospice.

Born September 17, 1949 in Newberry, daughter of the late Manley and Bernadine (McGilvary) Quick, Cecile was a 1967 graduate of Newberry High School.

Cecile was formerly employed at the Firestone store and later at Newberry Wood Products where she met the love of her life, Robert Whiskin.  They were united in marriage of August 14, 1971 at the Newberry Pentecostal Tabernacle Church.

In addition to being a devoted homemaker raising her family, Cecile operated Wildmere Resort on North Manistique Lake for 30 years.  Dedicating her life to her Lord Jesus Christ.  Cecile was a member of the Newberry Pentecostal Tabernacle Church where she was a Sunday school teacher and worship/song leader.  Her hobbies included puzzles, cross itching (which she taught at 4-H), fishing, kayaking and rock hunting.

In addition to her parents, Cecile is preceded in death by her brother-in-law Victor Freed.

Survivors include her loving husband, Robert, of McMillan; children Bobbie (Brent) Ashpole of DePere, Wisconsin, Jeffrey (Sara) Whiskin of Tomah, Wisconsin and John Whiskin of McMillan; grandchildren Auguste (Alex) Johnson, Josiah Ashpole, Jocelyn Ashpole, James Ashpole, Savannah Whiskin and Alesha Bufford; great-grandchildren Mason Johnson and Madilyn Johnson; siblings Thomas (Shelly) Quick of Clare, Mark (Cathy) Quick of Newberry, Sandra Freed of Engadine, Ila (Donald) Hyvarinen of Durand and Ellen (Larry) Selke of McMillan; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

A gathering of family and friends will be held Monday March 20, 2023 from 10:00 am until 11:00 am at the Newberry Pentecostal Tabernacle Church.  Funeral services celebrating the life of Cecile will follow at 11:00 am at the church with Pastor Ron Oberle officiating.  Interment will take place in the spring of 2023 at the East Lakefield Township Cemetery.

Lois Helen Anderson
February 22, 1933 – March 12, 2023

Longtime Newberry resident, Lois Helen Anderson (née Nordwall), 90, passed away Sunday afternoon, March 12, 2023 at Brookridge Heights Assisted Living in Marquette.

Lois was born February 22, 1933 in Holton Township, Michigan on a farmstead between Muskegon and Fremont to Swedish immigrants Hjalmer and Olga (Peterson) Nordwall and graduated from Hackley School of Nursing in Muskegon receiving a degree as a registered nurse.

As Earl Eugene “Finn” Anderson returned from the Korean War, the two were united in marriage on May 12, 1954 in Muskegon. Their eldest daughter, Nancy, was born in Dearborn in 1955 and the newly married couple settled in Newberry, Michigan and later the arrivals of their second daughter, Lynn, in 1956, followed by son, Michael, in 1958 and third daughter Lori in 1962.  Lois balanced the role of raising four children with her work at Newberry State Hospital where she had a distinguished career.  She also worked briefly at the Adult Learning Center in Marquette.

Lois was a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Newberry serving on various volunteer committees. Lois was a loving mother and grandmother who enjoyed travel. She was compassionate, had a wonderful sense of humor and could hardly pass by someone without eliciting their life story or declaring any little town or city “a nice place to live.” She retained her Swedish ancestry, pulling out surprising phrases, prayers, and songs and kept connections to the Swedish relatives throughout her life.

In addition to her parents, Lois is preceded in death by her husband Earl Eugene Anderson, son Michael Anderson and sister Thelma Chrystler Hagen. She will be deeply missed by children Nancy Reintjes of Marquette, Lynn (Richard) Walker of Chassell and Lori (Lynn) Johnson of Marquette; daughter-in-law Terese Anderson of Newberry; grandchildren Brandon Reintjes, Amanda Reintjes, Geir Johnson and Jonas Johnson; great grandchildren Lauris and Beata Reintjes. She will also be missed and remembered by her nieces and nephews.

A gathering of family and friends will be held Tuesday April 4, 2023 from 11:00 am until 12:00 noon at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Newberry.  Funeral services celebrating the life of Lois will follow at 12:00 noon at the church with Pastor Melinda VanderSys officiating.  Interment will take place in the spring of 2023 at Forest Home Cemetery.

Memorials may be directed to Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in her loving memory.

John E. Bodi Jr.
November 12, 1938 – March 16, 2023

Lifelong area resident, John Edward Bodi Jr., 84, of Engadine, died Thursday morning, March 16, 2023 at his residence in the presence of his loving family and the care of North Woods Hospice.

Born November 12, 1938 in Newberry, son of the late John Sr. and Gladys (Green) Bodi, John was a 1958 graduate of Newberry High School.

On January 6, 1959, John enlisted into the United States Army serving until his honorable discharge of December 16, 1960, attaining the rank of Private First Class.  John continued serving his country enlisting into the United States Air Force on September 9, 1963, serving during the Vietnam War until his honorable discharge on June 30, 1967 attaining the rank of Airman Second Class.

John was employed as a carpenter and a millwright for several years until his retirement and owned and operated his own furniture business.  Through the senior works program, John also spent time working at the youth center in Newberry which sparked his love of music with some.

John loved good looking and fast cars and, later in life, enjoyed doing body work on old trucks.  He also enjoyed riding motorcycles, boating, trout fishing and hunting partridge.  John was a member of the Calvary Bible Church in Engadine and an advocate for our Lord Jesus Christ.

In addition to his parents, John is preceded in death by his siblings Lois (Raymond) Loper, Jackie (Bill) Howard and Don (Billie Jean) Bodi.

Survivors include his loving wife, the former Bonnie Robinson of Engadine, whom he married on Valentine’s Day February 14, 1981 in Newberry; children Tim Bodi of Pickford, Jeff (Cheryl) Bodi of Soap Lake, Washington, Billy Halsell of Marquette and Jared (Sarah) Bodi of Manistique; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; sister Cheryl (Dennis) Norton of Pinckney.

A memorial service celebrating the life of John will be held Saturday March 25, 2023 at 10:00 am at the Calvary Bible Church in Engadine with Brian Oberg presiding.  Interment with full military rites will be held in the spring of 2023 at the Forest Home Cemetery in Newberry.
