The annual Tahquamenon Area Youth Football Camp returns to the Newberry High School football field next week. The camp is open to all area kids going into grades 4 through 8 and gives them a chance to try football in a fun and exciting atmosphere prior to the start of the upcoming youth football season.

This year’s youth football camp will run Monday-Wednesday July 25—27 from 6—7:30 p.m. Registration is $25 and covers all three days of activities. Proceeds from the camp are used for necessary equipment purchases and upgrades for the local youth football teams.

The camp will teach participants the basic fundamentals and positioning of football with each camper participating in drills and activities at every position. Instructors for the camp will include Newberry High School varsity and JV football players, high school coaches, and guest instructors.

On the final day of the camp, all of the kids will compete in scrimmages and games to wrap up the week.

The camp will be hosted by the Tahquamenon Area Youth Football League, which offers local programs and seasons for 4th, 5th, and 6th grade flag football and 7th and 8th grade tackle football.

The TAYFL will also hold its season registration each evening during the camp. The 2022 season registration is $25 for 4/5/6 flag football and $50 for 7&8 tackle football. Sixth grade students and families have the opportunity to choose which level they wish to participate in again this season.

A copy of the student’s birth certificate and a physical must be turned in before players are allowed to begin practicing. The first day of practice for 7th and 8th grade will be Monday August 8, and flag football practices and games will begin the week following Labor Day.

The TAYFL is again seeking volunteers for games and events, as well as coaches for the flag football program. Anyone with questions can contact Dan Hardenbrook at (906) 450-2750 or Zach Clickner at (906) 291-1381.
