Richard Mador
October 22, 1925 – September 20, 2021

Richard Mador, 95, of Newberry, died Monday evening September 20, 2021 at Helen Newberry Joy Hospital.

Richard was born October 22, 1925 in Dunkirk, New York, son of the late Casmir and Mary (Kyc) Madorski.

On September 11, 1950, Richard enlisted in the United States Army and served until September 12, 1952 attaining the rank of Private First Class and continuing in the Army Reserve until his honorable discharge on January 16, 1957.

On July 9, 1963, Richard married the former Ruth Jean Zukowski in Warren, Michigan.  Richard was employed as a journeyman Tool Machine Operator until his retirement. After his retirement he enjoyed spending his time doing carpentry work.

A resident of the Newberry area since the late 1990’s, Richard was a member of the American Legion Post #74.  He enjoyed fishing, picking blueberries, looking for Agates on Lake Superior, carpentry work and was an avid Detroit Tigers and Detroit Red Wings fan.

In addition to his parents, Richard is preceded in death by his wife Ruth Jean on November 20, 2015 and siblings Frank Madorski, Donald Madorski, Peter Madorski, Martha Rainney, Helen Rowe and Celia Lubera.

Survivors include his step-daughter Shirley Fintak of Newberry; granddaughters Karen (Alex) Adler of Mainz, Germany and Michelle (Richard) Kramer of Macomb Township; great-grandchildren Alyssa (Brady) Paquin of Goshen, Kentucky and Nick Kramer of Macomb Township; great-great-granddaughter Lily Paquin.

Per request, cremation services were accorded.  A private family service will take place at a later date.

Nancy Lee Whalen
May 24, 1947 – September 23, 2021

Nancy Lee Whalen, 74, of Newberry, died Thursday afternoon September 23, 2021 from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

Born May 24, 1947 in Eaton Rapids, daughter of the late Edward J. and Phyllis N. (Hill) Merchant, Nancy was a 1965 graduate of Charlotte High School and attended Davenport College of Business.

Nancy was employed as a bookkeeper for several companies in the Lansing area until her retirement.  A resident of Newberry since 2008, Nancy was a member of Living Waters Assembly of God Church and the American Legion Post #74 Ladies Auxiliary.  Her hobbies included crocheting, knitting, quilting, playing cribbage and an avid NASCAR fan.

In addition to her parents, Nancy is preceded in death by her husband Walter Whalen and son Richard “Rick” Whalen.

Survivors include her children Louanna (Jeff) Lawson of Charlotte, Buck (Cheryl) Whalen of Eaton Rapids and Jody (Peter) Lannoo of Canton; eleven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; siblings Sandra Fast of Charlotte, Sue Valora of Charlotte and Aggie (Neal) Robertson of Eaton Rapids; daughter-in-law Nancy Whalen of Holt; close friends and relatives of the Whalen family.

Per request, cremation services were accorded with a Celebration of Life to be held at a later date.
