Jeffrey Walter Morrison
Former Newberry resident, Jeffrey Walter Morrison, 46, of Escanaba, died Saturday July 4, 2020 at St. Francis Hospital in Escanaba. Born October 25, 1973 in Newberry, son of the late Brad and Melissa (Tucker) Morrison, Jeff was a 1991 graduate of Newberry High School. Jeff attended Bay College in Escanaba and held various employments during his lifetime including at mBank and Helen Newberry Joy Hospital. Jeff loved and was a fan of the Detroit Red Wings, Detroit Tigers, and Detroit Pistons but was a diehard Detroit Lions Fan. In addition to his parents, Jeff is preceded in death by his grandparents Cecil (Doris) Morrison and Junior (Irene) Tucker; uncle Joe Tucker. Survivors include his daughters Cassidy and Lily Morrison, grandchildren McKinley and Tucker all of Middleton; brother Chris Morrison of Newberry; nephew Kevan Blakely and great-niece Maci Blakely of Newberry; uncle Kevin Tucker of McMillan; special aunt Marilyn Morrison of Newberry in addition to several aunts, uncles and cousins; special friends Jason Gilbert and Wendy O’Hare. Per request, cremation services were accorded. A memorial service celebrating the life of Jeff will take place on Monday July 20, 2020 at 5:00 pm at the Newberry baseball field complex on M-28 with Pastor Melinda VanderSys officiating. Vicki Marie Funke
Vicki Marie Funke, 77, of Engadine, passed away peacefully in her sleep Saturday morning, July 11, 2020 at her residence in the presence and care of her loving family. Born April 22, 1943 in Cincinnati, Ohio, daughter of the late Charles and Betty (Winter) Tilbury, Vicki graduated from Batavia High School and the Jewish Hospital School of Nursing in 1966 receiving a degree as a registered nurse. Vicki was employed as a registered nurse mainly in the long term care setting for several years until her retirement in 1992. A resident of Engadine since 1995, Vicki enjoyed cooking, gardening, spending time with her family and cuddling her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Survivors include her loving husband, Hal, of Engadine, whom she married August 6, 1966; children Craig (Amy) Funke of Houston, Texas and Mandy (Keith) Butkovich of Engadine; grandchildren Ellie, Jake (Heaven), Max and Emma; great-grandchildren Weston and Cole; siblings Charles Jr. (Ginny) Tilbury and Nancy (Jamie) Perkins all of Cincinnati, Ohio. Lucille A. Pekkanen
Lucille A. Pekkanen, 91, of Newberry, passed away peacefully Tuesday evening June 30, 2020 surrounded by her loving family. Born February 5, 1929 in Newberry, daughter of the late Alford and Leona (Brunet) Johnson, Lucille was a lifelong Newberry resident. She was employed at the Norge Laundromat and The Washboard, retiring in 1994. Along with her sister Sue Taylor and numerous friends, Lucille enjoyed volunteering at the Tahquamenon Area Senior Citizens Center. She was also a member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church. In addition to her parents, Lucille is preceded in death by her husband Mike Pekkanen on June 5, 2009; sisters Sue Taylor, Jean Sayles, Arlet Norden, Helen Martin and brothers Peter, Neil and George Johnson. Survivors include her son John (Brenda) Leonard and daughter Linda (Dudley) Wass; grandchildren Evan, Alex, Angie, Dudley and Kyle; brothers Pat and Harry Johnson. According to her wishes, cremation has taken place. A graveside family memorial will be held at Forest Home Cemetery at a later date. Arlone Joan Vernon
Arlone Joan Vernon, 93, of Helmer, passed away on Tuesday, October 29, 2019 at St. Anne’s in Grand Rapids, MI surrounded by her family. Born October 18, 1926 in Saginaw, MI. Arlone was the daughter of Bernard and Johanna (Fleischman) Spatz. She worked from a young age at Spatz’s Bakery in Saginaw, MI which was founded by her grandfather, later ran by her parents and brothers and is currently run by her nephew. She lived in Lansing, MI where she and Robert raised their four children. She was involved in Girls Scouts and worked at JW Knapp’s Department Store. They moved to Helmer in 1983. She started and ran the Helmer House Gift Shop for many years. She was a loving and caring mother, grandma and great-grandma. She took great pride in her family and home-life. She was a tremendous baker spoiling her family with homemade bread and sweets. She was also a wonderful home maker, canning freezing fruits and vegetables for her family. Wonderful memories were made with her on the shores of Round Lake and Lake Superior. She is survived by her children: Judi & John Pulver of Grand Rapids, MI, Jim Vernon of Kingwood, TX, Jeanette & Mark Robinson of Dewitt, MI, Jill and Ed Bialek of Bay City, MI; nine grandchildren: Laura, Jim, Doug, Drue, Matthew, Benjamin, Jonathon, Jacob, and Christian; and four great grandchildren: Emilie, Ashlie, Cooper, and Taylor. Arlone is preceded in death by her husband, Robert Vernon to whom she was married to for 70 years.
