Maude Elizabeth Holbrook

Longtime Newberry resident, Maude Elizabeth Holbrook, 83, died Sunday afternoon March 14, 2021 at Golden Leaves Living Center in Newberry. Born March 31, 1937 in Iron Mountain, daughter of the late George and Marion (Thistle) Davis, Maude moved to Newberry at a young age and was a 1955 graduate of Newberry High School. On January 1, 1955, Maude married Mark R. Holbrook and made Newberry their home.  In addition to being a devoted homemaker raising her family, Maude was a member of Kingdom Hall of Jehovah Witnesses in Newberry and enjoyed vegetable and flower gardening, baking especially pasties, taking rides in the woods and loved to babysit her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In addition to her parents, Maude is preceded in death by her husband Mark on September 21, 2003 and several siblings. Survivors include her loving children Ray (Susan), Greg, Brenda (Jim) Hollingshead and Rosa (John) Zitnik all of Newberry; eight grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren; siblings Ruth Ranger of Lakefield, Margaret Freed of Perry, Florida and James Davis of Newberry; several nieces and nephews; great-nieces and great-nephews. Per her request, cremation services were accorded.  A gathering of family and friends with a memorial service celebrating the life of Maude Holbrook will take place at a later date at Beaulieu Funeral Home in Newberry. August Edward Mantei

Lifelong Engadine resident, August Edward Mantei, 76, died Wednesday evening March 10, 2021 in the presence of his loving family and the care of North Woods Hospice. Born April 17, 1944 in Marquette, son of the late August and Olga (Werner) Mantei, Ed moved to Engadine at a young age and was a 1962 graduate of Engadine High School. Ed was employed as an Attendant Nurse for over 27 years at the former Newberry Regional Mental Health Center until closure.  He continued employment as a Nurse’s Aide for North Woods Home Health and at the former Luce County Annex.  Ed was also a floral deliveryman in the Engadine area for Newberry Florist and also worked in the security department at Kewadin Shores Casino. Ed was a longtime member of Our Ladies of Lourdes Catholic Church in Engadine until closure and current member of St. Stephen’s Catholic Church in Naubinway. During this time, Ed was an altar server for both churches and member of Knights of Columbus #7472. Ed was an active volunteer and supporter of Engadine athletics taking tickets at all the sporting events for over 30 years.  Ed’s hobbies included reading, counting cross-stitch, collecting Pepsi products and a lover of all animals. In addition to his parents, Ed is preceded in death by his siblings Albert Mantei, Robert Oneil and Jackie (Lib) Simmons. Survivors include his loving wife, the former Betty Ann Butkovich, whom he married June 10, 1972 at Our Ladies of Lourdes Catholic Church; children Jeremiah Mantei and Jolene Mantei-Wilson both of Engadine; sister-in-law’s Faye Mantei, Crystal, Minnesota, Elaine Oneil of Potterville and Rose (Pete) Anderson of Newberry; brother-in-law’s Don (Cathy) Butkovich and Art (Peg) Butkovich all of Engadine; several nieces and nephews. A gathering of family and friends will take place Thursday June 10, 2021 from 10:00 am to 11:00 am at St. Stephens Catholic Church in Naubinway.  A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11:00 am at the church with Fr. Marty Flynn officiating.  Rite of Committal will take place at the Engadine Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to St. Stephens Mission in Ed’s memory. Robert Allen Fedorko

Robert Allen Fedorko, 73, of East Lake, died Tuesday afternoon March 2, 2021 at War Memorial Hospital in Sault Ste. Marie. Born October 15, 1947 in Detroit, son of the late Peter and Lucille (Rychman) Fedorko, Bob was a graduate of Thurston High School in Redford. Bob was employed as a high/low driver for Ford Motor Company for 30 years until his retirement.   Following his retirement, Bob moved to East Lake residing on the north side for the past 25 years.  Bob enjoying fishing, oil painting and sculpting his Bonsai trees. In addition to his parents, Bob is preceded in death by his sisters Diane Butcher and Ann Marie Fedorko. Survivors include his loving wife, the former Shirlee Bailey of East Lake, whom he married October 14,1994 in Newberry; sons Gregory Berry of Seney and Jeffrey Berry of Garden City; granddaughter Chelsea Berry of Garden City; siblings Peter (Chris) of White Lake, Gail Rychlinski of Redford, Patricia (Ronald) Sarrach of Macomb County, James (Denise) of Canton, William of Wayne, John (Susan) of Colorado, Donald (Helen) of Plymouth, Mary (Peter) Jacques of Westland and Michael of Adrian; several nieces and nephews. Per his request, cremation services were accorded.  A gathering of family and friends will take place at a later date. Memorials may be directed to Bethel Community Church in his memory.
