Thomas Carl Kaiser

Thomas Carl Kaiser, 74, of Newberry, died Monday afternoon February 15, 2021. Born May 2, 1946 in Cleveland, Ohio, son of the late Robert and Ruth (Gill) Kaiser, Tom moved to Michigan in 1964 and was a 1965 graduate of Grosse Pointe High School.  At a time when it was not popular, Tom enlisted in the United States Army on March 9, 1967 serving in Nuremberg, Germany, Vietnam and Fort Sill, Oklahoma until his honorable discharge on April 29, 1970 attaining the rank of Specialist Fourth Class.  Following his discharge, he returned to the Detroit area and despite the less than warm homecoming from protestors, Tom remained firm in his love for his country and protecting people’s rights. On September 15, 1973, Tom married the former Cathleen Courser. He began his career with the City of Detroit as a steamfitter in 1980 and enjoyed coaching youth league softball. Tom retired and moved to the Upper Peninsula in 2003 and began calling Newberry his real home. He enjoyed the simpler life the area offered and spending time reading, shooting, gardening and visits with his grandchildren. He was a charitable man who often gave money to organizations and individuals whom he felt needed and deserved it. Tom is preceded in death by his parents Robert and Ruth (nee Gill) Kaiser, his sister Sally (Cadaret) and his beloved wife Cathy. He is survived by his sister Mary Elizabeth “Betsy” (Greg) Hughes; daughter Kimberli (Alan) Wrobel and his son Christopher; grandchildren Hannah Kaiser (Michael Wilks), Ruth, Luke, and Zane Wrobel and Nathen Kaiser; several nephews, nieces and cousins. A memorial service celebrating the life of Tom will be held Saturday February 27, 2021 at 11:00 am at Trinity Lutheran Church with Pastor Kyle Kuehl officiating. For those who are unable to attend, the service will also be live streamed at www.facebook.com/tlcnewberry .  Due to COVID-19, social distancing and masks are required in accordance of the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.
