The Newberry Correctional Facility recently selected officer Jason Nicholson as the 2023 Officer of the Year. Nicholson has been a corrections officer for 14 years, all of them at the Newberry facility. He is known as the “go-to” guy, using his experience and skills to mentor new staff. Nicholson is also credited for being level-headed, calm, and using good judgment.
In 2017, Nicholson put his life in danger while off duty to detail two armed men who had broken into a local grocery store. He also helped preserve the crime scene and control the crowd.
Nicholson is active in the community, assisting with the Winter Carnival in Curtis, local youth basketball, and the Lions Club.
He lives in Curtis with his wife, Kena.
