The American Legion Post 74 of Newberry is ready for the 21st Annual Community Buck Pole event, which is this Friday, November 15, on the opening day of Whitetail firearm season. Hunters who bag a buck on the opening day of deer season can display it on the pole and be entered to win prizes.
There is no pre-registration or fee to participate.
The buck pole will be open Friday from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. that evening. After 7 p.m., prizes for bucks in various categories will be handed out, and drawings for bonus prizes will be awarded.
“We have door prizes for those who come,” said Becky Keene, an event organizer. “We are doing things a little different this year for the prizes.”
The categories and prizes for those participating in the buck pole are
Biggest rack: $300, sponsored by Hank’s General Store;
Heaviest deer: $200, sponsored by Great Lakes Truck Service and Towing;
Oldest hunter: $175, sponsored by Beth Gibson;
Youngest Hunter: $100, sponsored by Brow’s Excavating;
First youth: $100, sponsored by Newberry Motors.
Several other cash prizes that will also be awarded. Bucks must be at the Legion by 7 p.m. to participate, and hunters will need to take their deer home that night.
Bonus prize drawings for hunters who hang a deer are sponsored by Renze Power Sports of Newberry, Curtis True Value Hardware, and Bowman Gas Company of Newberry. A youth prize, a bike, was donated by Michael Maki and family.
A meal will be served that evening in the Legion big hall from 5 – 8 p.m. The meal will consist of Swiss steak, mashed potatoes and gravy, baked beans, corn, dinner roll, and dessert. The cost of the meal is $10, and everyone is welcome to attend.
The American Legion encourages hunters to bring their buck to the pole and wishes all good luck.
