All prisoners at the Newberry Correctional Facility have been tested again for COVID-19 after a staff member was diagnosed on August 1. As of Monday, August 17, 116 prisoners and four staff have been infected in this outbreak.

Most positive Newberry prisoners have been asymptomatic, said Communications Representative Holly Kramer. None of them have died.

The prison is beginning a third round of coronavirus testing, Kramer said, and staff are encouraged to accept free testing but are not forced to get tested. Staff members were tested on August 6 and August 14.

The facility continues to separate infected prisoners from the rest of the population, requires all inmates and staff to wear face masks at all times, and cleans regularly throughout the day with bleach
