Early in the competition, it looked like another TAYHA team would punch their ticket to “States”.

Senior basketball players from the Engadine Boys and Girls Varsity Basketball teams will be honored and recognized in a special ceremony between games on Wednesday, February 7.

The Engadine girls basketball team celebrated a breakthrough win Friday, never giving up and never letting up in a 41-27 win over the Rudyard Lady Bulldogs.

A dominant night and another big win for the Lady Indians was overshadowed by a nasty physical altercation in the second half of last Wednesday’s Girls Varsity Basketball game in Newberry.

After nearly 13 hours, it came down just a few seconds for Hayden O’Neil. There was plenty of waiting in between plenty of wrestling.

Converting turnovers in the neutral zone into odd-man rushes toward the Manistique net, the Jets were able to score twice in the first three minutes of the contest.

Hayden O’Neil had a day to remember. He was a perfect 5-0 in matches. His undefeated day included three wins that took less than one minute each. O’Neil also earned his 100th career Varsity win, a milestone many wrestlers never reach.

The wrestlers from Engadine and Newberry have already gotten off to strong start, led by a blend of experienced leaders and newcomers likely to make an impact.

It was a nearly perfect performance on night one of a new season for the Newberry Lady Indians Varsity Basketball team, as they took down EUP Conference opponent Pickford 46-29 last Friday.

Austin, a 2010 Hall of Fame inductee, the architect and then savior of high school football programs around the state, including Engadine in the Eastern UP, and most recently the man behind Newberry’s resurgence, is officially retiring.
