Motorists traveling between Marquette and Sault Ste. Marie should be prepared for possible traffic delays on Wednesday, July 29, as a large multi-agency training exercise moves across the Upper Peninsula.
The planned exercise involves U.S. military personnel, the Michigan State Police, local law enforcement agencies and emergency response partners. Officials emphasize the event is only a training exercise and there is no danger to the public.
On Wednesday afternoon, participating personnel and equipment will travel from the Marquette area to Sault Ste. Marie. Drivers may encounter slower-moving military and emergency response vehicles along M-28, resulting in temporary traffic delays. The exact timing of the convoy could change.
Motorists are encouraged to allow extra travel time if they encounter the convoy.
Residents throughout the region may also notice an increased presence of military personnel, law enforcement officers, specialized vehicles, helicopters and other emergency response equipment during the four day exercise.
Michigan State Police said troopers and local law enforcement officers will remain available to respond to routine calls for service and 911 emergencies throughout the training.
Officials say the exercise is designed to strengthen coordination between military, law enforcement and emergency response agencies while improving preparedness for a wide range of emergencies.
