Engadine Consolidated Schools and the Engadine Key Club will benefit children and honor local heroes for their service at Thursday’s home girls basketball game against Newberry. The 1st Annual Teddy Bear Toss and Hometown Hero Night will begin at 6 p.m.
Fans are encouraged to bring a new stuffed animal to the event. At the end of the first quarter, fans can toss their stuffed animals onto the floor, where they will be collected and donated to local organizations to be given to children. At halftime, local heroes who serve our communities will be introduced and honored during a special ceremony. Anyone with questions on the Teddy Bear Toss and Hometown Hero events can contact Engadine Key Club member Nate Stielstra at 906-632-2953. You can also contact Deb Dewyse at Engadine Consolidated Schools.
Newberry enters the game from atop the EUP Conference standings. The Lady Indians began the week 11-1 overall, and 8-0 in league play. Engadine enters as heavy underdogs at 0-15 on the season. Despite the record, the Lady Eagles continue to improve, and looked impressive at times in a 60-20 loss against Mackinaw City on Monday night.
The Lady Indians are one of the top Division 4 teams in the Upper Peninsula. Winners of seven straight games, the Lady Indians are hoping to keep momentum going as they chase a conference title and top seed in the upcoming MHSAA Districts, where they could see the Lady Eagles one more time in postseason play. Newberry won the first meeting of the season 66-10 on January 19 in Newberry.
