Last fall, the Paradise Area Community Foundation (PACF) announced a competition for area high school students to design a new logo for the foundation. The board met on April 29 and selected a design created by Addison Schroeder, a senior at Newberry Area High School, for the new foundation logo. The PACF board felt that her submission stood out as a well-rendered design that made a strong local connection with the prominent use of wild blueberries. Schroeder will receive the top prize of $500.
Designs submitted by Hannah Brindley, a junior at Sault Area High School and Career Center, and Olivia Taylor, a sophomore at Newberry Area High School, were selected as runners-up in the competition. They will each receive a check for $100.
The PACF board received 31 entries to the logo competition – eight from students at the Sault Area High School and Career Center and 23 from Newberry Area High School students. Mike Hobbs, PACF Board President, said the board was excited to receive so many entries. “It’s great to have so many students involved. We were impressed with their talent and creativity. It was both a fun and educational experience.”
All students who submitted designs will receive a $15 Pizza Hut gift card.
Hobbs noted that the competition received strong support from teachers at both high schools. Linus Parr, Visual Arts, Wood Shop and CTE Building Trades Instructor at Tahquamenon Area Schools used the competition as assignment in his high school art class. Mr. Parr had students create original drawings. His focus was on teaching design. As such, Newberry students were not allowed to use computer graphics. Anne White, Visual Arts Teacher and Shanyn Aldridge, Digital Business Teacher, provided support to student artists at the Sault Area High School and Career Center.
“We are grateful for the support of these teachers. They made this a great learning opportunity for the students.” Hobbs said. “We couldn’t have done it without them.
