Newberry High School seniors were recipients of a number of awards and scholarships at the annual Class Night program held in the school cafeteria on Wednesday, May 20.
Craig Whalen was the winner of the top award, the C. L. Bystrom Outstanding Senior Award, named in honor of C.L. Bystrom, superintendent of the district for 32 years. The award was presented by teacher Candy Labadie.
The Newberry Fire Department awarded two scholarships—one to Craig Whalen and the other to Ashley Dzelak.
Helen Johnson, CEO of Helen Newberry Joy Hospital, presented three scholarships to seniors entering the health care field. Those awarded were Ashley Dzelak, Garrett Lewicki, and Craig Whalen.
Tahquamenon Education Foundation director Larry Vincent presented more than $27,000 worth of scholarships.
Ashley Dzelak, who plans to attend schooling for nursing, presented a Star Fish Award to CTE (Career and Technical Education) Health instructor Brook Dake.
National Honor Society students were presented honor cords to be worn at graduation. Cords were also presented to honor roll students, Tribal seniors, and CTE participants.
Seniors who received straight A’s all year and students who received President’s Education Awards were honored.
Though the night mostly revolved around the graduating seniors, American Legion District 11 Commander Mark Maida presented the Teacher of the Year Award to Candy Labadie.
The evening ended with an address by class president Renanah Weller.
