Students at Newberry High School (NHS) are in the middle of a busy Spirit Week celebrating their annual fall homecoming with activities leading up to the Varsity football game on Saturday night.
This year’s fall homecoming game is on Saturday afternoon, September 20 instead of the usual Friday night program. The Newberry Indians will take on St. Ignace with the J.V. game to begin at 2 p.m. and the Varsity at 4 p.m.
The annual Powder Puff game, where freshman and junior girls played flag football against the sophomores and seniors, took place last weekend. The freshman and juniors won 8-6 in overtime.
Each day of Spirit Week has its own dress-up theme. On Monday, students wore camouflage for Hunter Day. Tuesday was Pajama Day. Wednesday is Fashion Disaster Day. Thursday is dress up day.
Friday is Orange and Black Day, where students proudly wear their school colors.
One of the main events will be the crowning of the king and queen during the half time ceremonies of the Varsity game. Senior queen candidates are Olivia Birk, Ashley Dzelak, Matti Krupla, Aliya Taylor, Samantha Taylor, and Renanah Weller. One of these six candidates will be crowned the 2025 queen. The king, a senior football player, will be chosen by his team.
The queens’ assembly will be held at 9:15 a.m. on Thursday, September 18 in the J.L. DeCook Gymnasium.
A pep assembly will take place at 1:45 p.m. on Friday, September 19 in the J.L. DeCook Gymnasium.
The homecoming parade will step off at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday. The parade will proceed north on Newberry Avenue, make its way down West John Street, ending at the football field. Parade entries will include senior floats, queen candidates, and the American Legion Post 74 color guard.
