Hi, I am Claire Oven and I am incredibly grateful to have been given the opportunity to do a work study program at the Newberry News! I plan to major in writing at the University of Michigan starting this summer, and will use this experience to learn to write in a professional setting. Writing is a strong suit of mine; sometimes I think it’s easier to write what I want to say than to express it verbally.
My parents are Gerald and Sharon Oven of Naubinway. Between the two of them, they have six kids, including me. This means I have five siblings, along with a dog and two cats. During the summer, I work at Village Pizza and Coffee Alley in Naubinway. I am a senior at Engadine Schools, where I have recently begun working on a newspaper of my own called the Eagle Cry.
I’m an active member of Key Club, am currently the secretary/treasurer of Student Council, have completed several leadership classes, and have participated in five different team sports. These opportunities have helped me develop leadership skills and to prioritize doing nice things for others.
I am also an honors student who plays the French horn and sings in musicals. Basically, what I am saying is that I’m a huge nerd with an overwhelmingly large heart.
My primary focus as a person is to always put good into the world. I am happiest when I know I am making a difference in the world and in the lives of others. The world can seem like such a bad place with bad people who do bad things. Call me naive, but I just can’t believe that people are not good at heart. I am excited to find and share stories that highlight the good in people.
Writing is one of the greatest forms of communication and self-expression. I have always felt comfort in knowing that I could express on paper what I failed to in conversation or discussion. Written words can bring positivity to a community, and my greatest hope is that working at the newspaper this semester will give me an outlet to do just that.
