Three eighth-grade students from Engadine Consolidated Schools have been recognized as local winners in the 57th Annual American & Me Essay Contest, sponsored by Farm Bureau Insurance.

The students wrote essays on the topic, “My Personal Michigan Hero,” highlighting individuals who have made a meaningful impact in their lives and communities.

Taking first place was Trulie Caswell, followed by Zander Rasmussen in second place and Maggie Mersnick in third place.

The contest was sponsored locally by Farm Bureau Insurance Agent Tracy Germain. Founded in 1968 by Farm Bureau Insurance, the American & Me Essay Contest is open to eighth-grade students throughout Michigan and encourages young writers to reflect on important people, values and experiences.

This year, more than 3,000 eighth-grade students from nearly 200 schools across the state submitted essays for consideration.

School officials congratulated the students on their achievement and the quality of their writing.
