William R. Nesbit
August 27, 1940 – August 8, 2025
Longtime Newberry resident, William Robert Nesbit, 84, died Friday morning August 8, 2025 at the Oscar G. Johnson VA Medical Center in Iron Mountain.
Born August 27, 1940 in Newberry, son of the late William and Mary (McNeil) Nesbit, Bill was a 1958 graduate of Manistique High School.
On March 18, 1960, Bill enlisted into the United States Army serving stateside until his honorable discharge on August 19, 1960, attaining the rank of Private First Class.
Following his discharge, Bill attended Michigan Technological University in Houghton. Bill was employed as a surveyor for several years until his retirement.
Bill attended St. Gregory’s Catholic Church and was a founding member of the Newton Township Historical Society. Bill enjoyed the outdoors, hunting and walking, and also enjoyed reading.
In addition to his parents, Bill is preceded in death by his siblings Roger Nesbit and Phyllis Wilson.
Survivors include his sisters Gloria Nesbit and Barbara Nesbit, both of Newberry; nephews K.C. (Tara) Wilson of Marinette, Wisconsin and Greg (Barbara) Wilson of Menominee; nieces Kim (Dennis) Quinlan of Newberry and Patti (Don) Martz of Marinette, Wisconsin; several great-nephews and great-nieces; best friend John (Marsha) Blanchard of Gould City.
A graveside committal service, with Fr. Jacek Wtyklo officiating, and military honors conducted by the United States Army Honor Guard and the American Legion Post #74 will take place Tuesday September 23, 2025 at 2:00 pm at Forest Home Cemetery in Newberry.

Russell Joseph Garrod
July 15, 1951 – September 17, 2025
Lifelong Newberry resident, Russell Joseph Garrod, 74, died Wednesday September 17, 2025 at his residence.
Born July 15, 1951 in Newberry, son of Dolores Mark, Russ was a 1969 graduate of Newberry High School.
On December 4, 1971, Russ married the former Sundae Dalgleish in Newberry. Russ was formerly employed at the Newberry Regional Mental Health Center and later at the Newberry Correctional Facility as store manager, retiring from the State of Michigan in 2002. He then continued part-time employment at the Newberry Country Club and Northern Lights Vision Center.
Russ was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hunting, brook trout fishing, golfing, cross-country skiing. Russ also enjoyed playing billiards and scenic drives through the Seney National Wildlife Refuge. Earlier in life, Russ was a member of the McMillan baseball team, known as Russ “Shady” Garrod.
Russ is preceded in death by his parents, Frank “Bunk” and Dolores “Dee” Kirby; wife Sundae Garrod on February 17, 2023.
Survivors include his loving children Colleen (Phil) Smutek of Newberry and R.J. (Tabatha) Garrod of Kinross; his grandchildren who affectionately referred to Russ as “Papa”, Travis Bruce, Mackenzie Webb and Jeni (Zach Sylvester) Garrod; great-grandchildren Ryder Sylvester and Akari Webb; brother Leroy (Donna) Garrod of Lake Tahoe, Nevada; nephew Alvin (Cindy) Dalgleish of McMillan, MI.
Per request, cremation services were accorded. A gathering of family and friends celebrating the life of Russ will be held at a later date. Russ and his beloved wife, Sundae, will be laid to rest at Forest Home Cemetery.
