Steven Myers, M.D.
March 26, 1937 – September 12, 2025

Steven Alan Myers, M.D. of Marquette, MI, age 88, passed away Friday, September 12, 2025. Private interment, with U.S. Air Force Honors, will be held at Forest Home Cemetery, Newberry, Michigan.

Steve was born in LaCrosse, WI on March 26, 1937, son of the late Harold and Florence (Kidder) Myers. He was a graduate of Lowell Public High School Class of 1954. Steve proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force from 1954-1957. Upon returning to civilian life, he pursued higher education with a fervor that would define his academic and professional journey. Steve graduated as valedictorian from Central Michigan University in 1960 with a bachelor’s degree and went on to earn his Medical Degree from Wayne State University, School of Medicine, in 1964.

In 1974, Dr. Myers began a long and impactful career in mental health care, culminating in his retirement in 1992 from Newberry Regional Mental Health Center, where he served as Chief of Clinical Affairs for 18 years. He then continued his work as a psychiatrist at Marquette Branch Prison in Marquette, MI, before fully retiring. Throughout his career, Dr. Myers held numerous memberships and leadership positions in professional societies and committees. He published in scientific journals, contributed chapters to books, and gave presentations on a wide range of topics. He also held teaching appointments at Wayne State University School of Medicine and consulting roles at several institutions, including Luce County Community Mental Health, Marquette General Hospital, Detroit Memorial Hospital and Kinross Correctional Facility. In addition to his professional affiliations, Dr. Myers was a member of Mensa, Newberry American Legion Post #74, the Newberry Elks Lodge #1705 and Ducks Unlimited, reflecting his wide-ranging interests and deep ties to both intellectual and community life.

Dr. Myers’ impact extended far beyond his professional life. On May 12, 1973, he married Sally Ann Atkin, and together they raised eight children in Newberry, MI. Sally preceded him in death on May 28, 2001. Dr. Myers instilled in his children a love for life’s simple pleasures—teaching them to fish without worrying about catching anything, to garden without focusing on the harvest, and to explore the world with curiosity and wonder, believing always that they were “travelers, not tourists.” In his younger years, Steve had an adventurous spirit, hitchhiking across the country while traveling with the carnival. He worked the Pronto Pup stand and Huckley Buck card game, experiencing the diverse mosaic of America and developing the love for life’s unpredictability that would define him. Dr. Myers was a lifelong learner, fascinated by theology, classical music, current events and science. His love for Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 was profound, and he often considered it the greatest piece of music ever composed. On April 8, 2004, Steve married Alexis Chenard, who stood by his side with love and support in the years that followed.

Dr. Myers will be remembered as a man who lived a life of professional integrity, curiosity and service. May he rest in peace, his journey now complete, but his legacy enduring forever.

Dr. Myers is survived by his wife, Alexis Myers; 8 children, Elizabeth (John) Colangelo, Lucinda (Preston) Fraley, Rebecca Myers, Jennifer (Nik) Vulaj, David (Yuriko) Myers, John (Jillian) Myers, Heidi (Brian) Sarver and Bret (Nicole) Myers; 15 grandchildren, Eden Colangelo, Bella Colangelo, Viktor Vulaj, Christian Vulaj, Evelyn Vulaj, Sofia Vulaj, Mia Myers, Kent Myers, Nolan Myers, Owen Myers, Ava Sarver, Zoey Sarver, Calvin Sarver, Aiden Myers and Jack Myers; 2 step-children, Terry (Ann) Johnson and Karl Johnson.
