Murvle Franklin Payton
May 21, 1943 – July 31, 2025
Longtime Newberry resident, Murvle “Murv” Franklin Payton, 82, died Thursday morning, July 31, 2025 at U.P. Health Systems-Marquette.
Born May 21, 1943 in Carleton, Michigan, son of the late John and Maurine (Craycraft) Payton, Murv moved to Hulbert in his youth, relocating to McMillan and later to Newberry, where he was a 1961 graduate of Newberry High School.
Murv’s employment career began in road construction, working on Interstate 75 and continued with the Michigan Department of Mental Health for over 30 years, retiring as Director of the Fire-Safety-Security Department.
Murv enjoyed spending time at the family camp (Hatch Camp) with family, especially during hunting season with his son, brother, granddaughter and grandsons. Murv also enjoyed fishing, traveling, reading and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.
Murv is preceded in death by his parents, John Payton and Maurine Benedict; step-father Fred “Sandy” Benedict.
Survivors include his loving wife of over 65 years, the former Beverly Hanger; children Gregory (Amy) Payton of Buffalo, Wyoming, Jeffrey (Mike) Payton of Walled Lake, Michigan and Carrie Dewyer of Marquette, Michigan; brother Roger (Kim) Payton of Crawfordville, Florida; nephews Johnathan Payton, Kyle Randolph and Cole Randolph all of Florida; grandchildren Justin Payton (Jessie) of Florida, Heather (Han) Taylor of Two Harbors, Minnesota, Ethan Dewyer of Raleigh, North Carolina, Danielle Dewyer (Josh) of Mt. Morris, New York and Holly Spence of Minnesota; great-grandchildren Ian Payton, Scout Taylor, Wyatt Wilde, Hailey Spence, Bella Spence, D-Anton Spence, Leighton Spence and Kestral Spence.
Per request, cremation services were accorded. Graveside services will be held at a later date, with a date and time to be announced.

Ivan James Taylor
April 7, 1941 – July 29, 2025
Ivan James Taylor, 84, of Newberry, died Tuesday morning, July 29, 2025 at his son’s, Ivan, residence in Kinross.
Born April 7, 1941 in Petoskey, son of the late Cecil and Marcella (Blackbird) Taylor, Ivan enlisted into the United States Army on July 2, 1958 serving until his honorable discharge on May 2, 1961, attaining the rank of Private First Class and continued in the Army Reserves until being released of duty on July 1, 1964. Ivan was employed as a Registered Nurse with a Master’s Degree for the Michigan State Civil Service Commission of for 36 years until his retirement.
Ivan was a member of the Little Traverse Band of Odawa Indians, life member of B.P.O.E. #1705, National Rifle Association, Amvets, ATA and the American Trap Shooters Association. Ivan was lifelong outdoorsman, enjoying hunting and fishing.
In addition to his parents, Ivan is preceded in death by his siblings Cecil Taylor, Richard Taylor, Clyde Taylor, Donald Taylor, Shirley Taylor, Ruth Taylor, Alice Taylor, Theresa Taylor, Catherine Schwiderson and Helena Esker.
Survivors include his children Robert (Cheryl) Taylor of Newberry, Ivan (Shirley) Taylor of Kinross and Rhonda (Steve) Edwards of Little Lake; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; brother Robert Taylor of Almont; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Per request, cremation services were accorded with no public services scheduled.
