Thomas Schweitzer
February 28, 1940 – February 27, 2026

Thomas James Schweitzer, 85, of Curtis, went to be with his Lord Friday afternoon February 27, 2026 at the Schoolcraft Medical Care Facility in Manistique with his loving wife, Annette, as his side.

Born February 28, 1940 in Cassopolis, son of the late Woodrow and Hildred (Collins) Schweitzer, Tom was a 1958 graduate of Sebewing High School.

Tom honorably served twice in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War, first serving from October of 1958 to August of 1960 and later from September of 1966 to September of 1968, attaining the rank of Boilerman First Class. Tom continued to serve in the United States Naval Reserves for 30 years until March 31, 1992, retiring with the rank of Senior Chief Petty Officer.

Tom was employed by General Motors with most of his time working in the powerhouse at Saginaw Steering Gear, retiring in 1995 with 30 years of service. His last work adventure was operating Custom Refrigeration, Heating & A/C in Curtis until retiring in 2005.

A resident of Curtis for the past 30 years, Tom was a member of the Grace Lutheran Church in Germfask, life member of the VFW Post and enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, golfing, old tractors and wintering in Florida for the past 20 years.

Out of love for his country and respect for all the service men of women of the United States Armed Forces, Tom was instrumental in organizing the Veterans Memorial at Woodlawn Cemetery in Curtis. It was completed with lots of hard work and donations from the local community and local organizations. Above all, Tom was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather.

In addition to his parents, Tom is preceded in death by his siblings Joann Schweitzer, Mary Lou (Larry) Adam and Janet (Lee) Truemner; son-in-law Reg Goodchild.

Survivors include his wife, the former Annette Abram, whom he married October 18, 1985 at Grace Lutheran Church in Germfask; his children Tammy Goodchild of Sanford, Terry Schweitzer of Sanford, Ryan (Angel Hardy) Abram of Newberry, Sheri (Coleridge) Hand of Kalispell, Montana and Kristi (Brandon) Fox of Newberry; eight grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren; siblings Ella May Schweitzer of Sebewing and Dave Schweitzer of Bad Axe; many nieces and nephews.

Graveside services with military honors rendered by the United States Navy Honor Guard will take place in the spring/summer of 2026 at the Woodlawn Cemetery with Pastor Kyle Kuehl officiating, with a date and time to be announced.
