Catherine H. Monteith
July 22, 1952 – December 1, 2024

Catherine Helen Monteith, 72 of Gould City passed away peacefully at her home on December 1, 2024.

Catherine was born on July 22, 1952, to Robert Dooley Jr. and Elizabeth (Walker) Dooley of Detroit, Michigan. She is a graduate of Bishop Borgess High School’s Class of 1970. On August 31, 1991, she married John Lee Monteith of Plymouth, MI.

Catherine began her career as a cook in the food service industry at St. John’s Seminary in Plymouth. She then moved on to Meijer’s. By 1994, her husband retired, and they headed northward, relocating to the upper peninsula’s Gould City where her husband’s family is from. She accepted the manager’s position at Michihistrigan. Prior to her retirement, she was the cook at Dreamland.

Catherine loved the outdoors and spent a lot of time outside enjoying the sunshine, big blue skies, with an abundance of wildlife while taking long walks or enjoying a great bike ride. She was wonderful at crocheting and did so whenever she had spare time; she also spent a lot of time doing puzzles. Baking was a true love, especially her amazing bread. Catherine had an excellent group of friends and neighbors and enjoyed taking the occasional day trip together. They shared a true friendship, always being there helping her through her tough times.

Catherine is survived by children, Denise (Bill) Warren, of Cooks, MI; Diana Jeffers of Bellmead, TX; and Debbie (Jeff) Hahn, Valley Center, CA; brother-in-law, Bob (Toni) Monteith of Plymouth, MI; sister-in-law Judy Leveille of Gould City, MI, and Maureen (Frederick) Santilli of Belleville, MI. Catherine was also survived by her many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

Preceding Catherine in death was her husband of thirty years, John; her parents, Robert and Elizabeth; brother, Michael, and her sister, Michele.

The family will be planning a Celebration of Life in the spring/summer time-frame.

Rosann (Dake) Brown
September 4, 1927 – December 7, 2024

Longtime Newberry resident, Rosann (Dake) Brown, 97, died Saturday morning December 7, 2024 at Evergreen Living Center in St. Ignace.

Born September 4, 1927 in Newberry, daughter of the late Neil and Rose (LaBlance) Dake, Rosann was a graduate of Newberry High School and graduate of St. Anthony’s Nursing School receiving a degree as a registered nurse.

Rosann was formerly employed as a RN at the Tahquamenon General Hospital and later at the Newberry Regional Mental Health Center for several years until her retirement in 1982.

Rosann was a member and elder of the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians, EMT for the Luce County Ambulance Corp. and volunteer for the American Red Cross. A member of St. Gregory’s Catholic Church, she also attended the First Presbyterian Church. Rosann enjoyed gardening, watching the Green Bay Packers and spending time with her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, Rosann is preceded in death by her husband L.D. Brown on May 25, 2007, son John Jago and grandson Micheal Jago II.

Survivors include her children Micheal (Rebecca) Jago of Newberry, Cathy (Joe) LaBlance of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Suzanne Jago of Sault Ste. Marie, Kenneth Jago of Newberry and Clyde (Jan) Jago of Superior, Wisconsin; 14 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren and 18 great-great-grandchildren.

A gathering of family and friends will take place Friday May 16, 2025 from 12:00 noon until 1:00 pm at St. Gregory’s Catholic Church in Newberry. A Memorial Mass will follow at 1:00 pm at the church with Fr. Jacek Wtyklo officiating. Rite of Committal will take place at the Forest Home Cemetery.

Memorials may be directed to St. Gregory’s Catholic Church or the First Presbyterian Church in her loving memory.

Billy James Halsell
October 1, 1972 – December 7, 2024

Billy James Halsell, age 52, of Marquette, passed away on Saturday, December 7, 2024 at U.P. Health System of Marquette. A Memorial Celebration will be held at 1:00 pm Saturday, December 14, 2024 at Joshua James Bar & Grill, 12896 M-28, Newberry, MI. 49868.

Billy, son of Bonnie Jean Bodi (Robinson) and brother to Jared Bodi and Jeff Bodi, grew up in Newberry, Michigan. He attended Newberry High School and Northern Michigan University.

Shortly after, he moved to Clearfield, Utah where he had two sons, Caleb Halsell and Liam Halsell. It was here that he began his career as an electrician and spent his free time riding dirt bikes with a group known as Budget Racing.

Few years later he moved to Las Vegas, Nevada where he raised his boys and shared his passion of music, art, riding dirt bikes, and making every moment memorable.

After nearly 20 years out west, Billy moved back to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan to be closer to his mother Bonnie and brother Jared. At this time, he joined the Union IBEW and spent as much time as he could at the family farm where he built a shack that soon became his favorite place to be.

Billy was hard working, creative, artistic, musically inclined, caring and selfless. He was good-humored, laid-back, and would make any occasion he attended enjoyable for anyone there and, above all, he was loving.

Billy leaves behind his mother, Bonnie Bodi (Robinson) of Engadine; brothers, Jeff Bodi of Washington and Jared Bodi (Sarah Rantanen) of Engadine; sons, Caleb Halsell (Nicole) of Burton, Michigan and Liam Halsell of Davison, Michigan; two grandchildren, Jasper Halsell and Juniper Halsell; nephew Bradley Bodi.

Billy was preceded in death by Herman and Irene Robinson and his infant brother.
