Cassie Lynn Moses
July 7, 1983 – October 13, 2025

Cassie Lynn Moses, 42, of Engadine, died Monday afternoon, October 13, 2025 at Helen Newberry Joy Hospital. Cassie was born July 7, 1983 in Manistique, daughter of Jacob and Diane (Selby) Moses. Cassie fought a 38-year battle with tumors but never let it affect her. She will be missed forever by all that knew her and will always be “Momma’s” baby girl.

Cassie never met anyone she didn’t like as she loved people deeply, having a strong relationship with God. Cassie was “personality plus” and had no problem speaking her mind, keeping on point every time. At times, Cassie was sassy but a sweet girl.

She loved Elvis Presley and could tell you everything about him, often debating with her Uncle Larry about Elvis’ history. Cassie enjoyed the shores of Lake Superior rock picking with her parents, swimming and “just being”. Her love for her brothers and sister was also apparent. Cassie was a member of the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians.

Cassie is preceded in death, yet reunited, with her loving father, Jacob. She is also preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, Jonas and Helen (Calkins) Moses and maternal grandparents, George and Diane (Porter) Selby, special cousin/sister Joey Selby and aunt Darlene Caswell.

She is survived by her loving mother, Diane, of Engadine; her siblings Jacob (Leona) Taylor of Grand Rapids, David (Missy) Selby of Portland and Nichole Moses of Grand Rapids; niece Malia Taylor of Grand Rapids and nephews Skyler (Rachel) Selby of Portland, Jordan (Allie) Selby of Charlotte and Micheal Banhagel of Grand Rapids; great nephews Barrett Jacob Selby of Portland and River Justin Selby of Charlotte; aunt Kathy (Guy) Ackley of Germfask; uncles Merlin Selby of Engadine, Robert (Kathy) Selby of Leslie, Curnell Selby of Saginaw, George (Vaughn) Selby of Leslie, Matt (Curlene) Moses of Idaho and Ernie (Sue) Moses of Newberry; special aunt Joby (Alan) Pastell of Curtis; special uncle Larry (Erica) Bash of Manchester; special cousins Pam (Frank) Lesatz and Gail Holbrook; special friends Penny Seiss of Garden City and Tammy (Mark) Stidman in addition to all the special people that loved Cassie throughout the years.

A gathering of family and friends will take place Friday October 17, 2025 from 2:00 pm to 3:00 pm at the Beaulieu Funeral Home in Newberry. Interment will take place at a later date at the Sandtown Cemetery.

James William Lone
April 2, 1931 – October 21, 2025

James William Lone, 94, left this world peacefully on October 21, 2025 to be with his wife, Gayle, and son, Mark.

He was born in Newberry on April 2,1931 to parents Victor and Bertha (Vantuyl) Lone. Raised in Newberry, he graduated from Newberry High School in 1948. He attended Albion College for one semester before entering school for one year at the Cleary Business College in Ypsilanti. After serving in the United States Air Force, he completed his education earning a Bachelor’s Degree and a Master’s Degree in Agriculture from Michigan State University in 1959.

On July 6, 1957, he married the love of his life Gayle (Cattley) Lone in Muskegon. They met while attending college at Michigan State University. They started their family with twin boys, Steve and Mark, in 1958, completing their family with Laurie in 1959 and Todd in 1960. They followed their professions through three states, IN, OH and PA before coming home to Newberry and purchasing Lone’s Gardens and continuing operations well into the 90’s.

He enlisted in the United States Air Force in December of 1951. He attended the Army language school at Presidio at Monterey, California and was sent to Germany for 2 1/2 years as a language specialist. In 1955, upon his honorable discharge from the Air Force, he furthered his education at Michigan State University where he received his Bachelors and Masters of Science degrees. After working as a 4-H agent and a grower’s agent at the H. J. Heinz Company, he returned to Newberry in 1967 to operate the multi-generational family garden, which dated back to the days of Newberry’s Celery farm fame where his grandfather was one of the growers.

James Lone was a dedicated and passionate member of the American Legion Post 74 serving as Commander in 1977, the year the construction of the current building was occurring. He was made a life member in 1986 when the mortgage on the new building was paid in full. The dedication of the “Big Hall” in 2025 at the American Legion now carries his name.

Left to love, remember and celebrate his life are his sons; Steve (Jules), Todd (Christy), Daughter; Laurie, Grandchildren; Michelle, Daniel and Jason.
Graveside services with military honors conducted by the United States Air Force and the American Legion Post #74 will take place Friday October 24, 2025 at 11:00 am at Forest Home Cemetery in Newberry.
