Sue L. Kuehnl
January 28, 1947 – September 20, 2023

Sue L. Kuehnl (nee Duncan), 76 of Gould City, MI, passed away Wednesday, September 20, 2023, at Vitalia Assisted Living in Westlake, OH.

Sue was born January 28, 1947 in Manistique, MI and had lived in Gould City for most of her life. She graduated from Northern Michigan University with a bachelor’s and master’s degree in education. Sue spent her career as an elementary teacher for more than 30 years, most of them in the kindergarten class at Engadine High School. She was active in tracing genealogy and assisting at the garage sales held by the Presbyterian Church.

Sue was married on July 27, 1974, to Frank Kuehnl, who preceded her in death.

Sue is survived by her loving children Frank R. Kuehnl (Meagan) of Pinkney, MI and Claudine Macey (Jonathan) of Westlake, OH; and cherished grandchildren Isabella, Frank A., and Rayla. She was preceded in death by her parents Claude and Clara (nee Danielson) Duncan and a sister Claudine Fisher.

The family suggests memorial contributions be forwarded to the Newton Township Historical Society. Sue will be laid to rest next to her husband at a private service in Newton Township Cemetery.

Lois Mary Burbach
March 20, 1931 – September 21, 2023

Lifelong Newberry resident, Lois Mary Burbach, 92, died Thursday afternoon September 21, 2023 at Robin’s Nest AFC Home with her loving family at her side.

Born March 20, 1931 in Newberry, daughter of the late Lloyd and Josephine (LaBelle) Brusseau, Lois was a 1949 graduate of Newberry High School.

On October 1, 1949, Lois married John Burbach III in Newberry. During her lifetime, Lois held various employments including as a waitress at the Falls Hotel and later in the meat department at the A & P grocery store until her retirement.

Lois was a member of St. Gregory’s Catholic Church and a volunteer at the Newberry Senior Citizens.  Lois enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren, knitting, reading, camping, playing cards, bowling, cross country skiing and scrapbooking.

In addition to her parents, Lois is preceded in death by her husband John III on May 25, 2008, son Johnny Wayne (Diane) Burbach and siblings Shirley Brusseau and Vern Brusseau.

Survivors include her children JoAnn (Dennis) Kearney of Sea Island, New Jersey, Keith (Debbie) Burbach of Newberry and LoisAnn (Fred) Newhouse of Newberry; 14 grandchildren, several great and great-great grandchildren; sister Phyllis (Dale) Wood) of Milwaukee, Wisconsin and sister-in-law Joyce Brusseau of Whitehall.

A gathering of family and friends will take place Thursday September 28, 2023 from 12:00 noon to 1:00 pm at St. Gregory’s Catholic Church in Newberry.  A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 1:00 pm at the church with Fr. Phil Witkowski officiating.

Memorials may be directed to the Newberry Senior Citizens in her loving memory.

Jennie Marie Hetrick
October 8, 1939 – September 18, 2023

Longtime McMillan resident, Jennie Marie Hetrick, 83, died Monday afternoon, September 18, 2023 at Golden Leaves Living Center with her loving family at her side.

Born October 8, 1939 in Manistique, she was the daughter of the late Russell and Irene (Mitchell) Clark.  Jennie grew up all over the Upper Peninsula as her family moved from logging camp to logging camp.

Jennie worked for many years at the Kalamazoo and Newberry State Hospital as a practical nurse.  On July 6, 1957, she married Ernest A. Hetrick Sr. in McMillan and made their home in Kalamazoo before moving back to McMillan in 1965.

Jennie was an amazing woman with a great faith in God. She was always an example of Christ and had a kind word and a smile for everyone she met. She was a wonderful homemaker and was an amazing crafter, cook and baker. Jennie enjoyed spending time with family and her grandchildren were her world.

In addition to her parents, Jennie is preceded in death by her father and mother-in-law, Denzil and Margaret Hetrick; grandson Aaron Moulton; siblings Ronald Clark, Butch Clark and Ruth Clark; special friend Rozella Cummings and many brother and sister-in-law’s.

Survivors include her loving husband, Ernest Hetrick Sr. of McMillan; children Cindy (Gary) Moulton of Newberry, Jennie Rose of Gladstone, Ernest Hetrick Jr. of Newberry, Scott Hetrick of McMillan and Aimee (Marty) Harju of McMillan; 12 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-granddaughter; sister-in-law’s Janet Clark of McMillan and Celia Liddell of Vero Beach, Florida; brother-in-law’s Donald Hetrick of McMillan and Matthew Hetrick of Kalamazoo.

A gathering of family and friends will take place Friday September 29, 2023 from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm at the Beaulieu Funeral Home in Newberry.  A memorial service celebrating the life of Jennie will follow at 1:00 pm at the funeral home with Pastor Tom Searl, of Lakefield Baptist Church, and Nathaniel Moulton, grandson of Jennie, as celebrants.
