Helen Boissineau
October 12, 1924 – April 25, 2023

Helen Boissineau, age 98, of Newberry, entered eternal life Tuesday, April 25, 2023, at Golden Leaves Living Center in the loving, comforting care of her family.

Helen was born October 12, 1924 in Detroit, daughter of the late Joseph and Genevieve (Trimpsick) Kurpinski. In 1973, she was united in marriage to Edward Boissineau in Livonia and relocated to the Upper Peninsula in 1975.

Helen loved being with her family and friends. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great, great-grandmother. Helen thoroughly enjoyed her work at St. Mary’s Hospital in Livonia helping patients, fundraising and being a member of the hospital auxiliary. She was active in catholic churches and was a member of the Altar Society and Eastern Stars. When her children were growing up, she was involved in the PTA and was a Den Mother for six years. Her interests and hobbies included her love of birch trees and owls, traveling, dancing, oil painting, cake decorating, and gardening.

Helen is remembered with love by her children Dr. Ron (Milissa) Tokar of Walla Walla, WA, Dr. Alan (Michael) Tokar of Hulbert, MI, Renee (Larry) Tokar of Gowen, MI, and Sharon (Bill) Magnuson of Curtis, MI; grandchildren Dylan Tokar, Dash Tokar, Bryan (Donna) Kovar, Andrea (Mike) Dominowski, Nicole Kovar, Jason (Heidi) Tokar, Dr. Erik (Irina) Tokar, Jessica (Corey) Armstead, Rebecca (Scott) Pillion, Jeremy (Gabby) Frechette, Alicia (Jeremy) Frechette, Nick Magnuson, and Michael Magnuson; 17 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren. Preceding her in death are her parents, Joseph and Genevieve, husband Edward, brother Stanley, and sister Jean.

The family will receive relatives and friends at St. Gregory’s Catholic Church on Saturday, June 17, 2023 beginning at 10:00 a.m. with service starting at 11:00 a.m. Fr. Jacek Wtyklo will be officiating. A luncheon will follow in the church hall.

Karen J. Hummelgard
May 14, 1939 – April 27, 2023

Lifelong Newberry resident, Karen Janet Hummelgard, 83, died Thursday morning, April 27, 2023 in the presence of her loving family and the care of North Woods Home Care and Hospice.

Born May 14, 1939 in Newberry, daughter of the late Otto and Elfie (Painter) Zenker, Karen was a 1957 graduate of Newberry High School.  On June 20, 1960, Karen married Robert A. Hummelgard and were united in marriage for 48 years until his passing on January 3, 2008.

Karen was proud to be a forklift operator for Newberry Woods Products for five years and was well known and loved as a cashier at Mac’s Market for fifteen years until her retirement.

Karen was a proud trustee, serving on the village council of Newberry. Her interests included reading, camping, traveling in her RV but her greatest love was her horses, which she owned and raised several over the years.  She was a 4-H leader for the horse and pony club and was affectionately known as “Gramma Hummie” with the 4-H kids.  She also enjoyed placing her horses in the annual Newberry Fourth of July parade.

Karen is preceded in death by her parents, Otto and Elfie and husband Robert.

Survivors include her loving children Barbara McNamara of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, Susan (Ernie) Moses of Apache Junction, Arizona, Robert (Lisa) Hummelgard of Newberry and Linda (Clinton) Gardner of Newberry; ten grandchildren, nineteen great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; brother Ivan (Debbie) Zenker of Rochester, Minnesota.

A memorial service celebrating the life of Karen will be held Thursday May 4, 2023 at 11:00 am at the Beaulieu Funeral Home in Newberry with Pastor Nancy Barkat officiating.  Interment will follow at the Forest Home Cemetery in Newberry.
