Elaine Judy Berry
September 19, 1953 – March 20, 2024

Longtime Newberry resident, Elaine Judy Berry, 70, recently of Cadillac, died Wednesday morning March 20, 2024 at her daughter, Jennifer Reed, residence in Seney, Michigan.

Born September 19, 1953 in Newberry, daughter of the late William & Nellie (Dalton) Kisro, Elaine was a 1972 graduate of Newberry High School.  Elaine continued her education at Northern Michigan University in Marquette in the field of nursing and, later in life in 1985, received her certification in cosmetology.

Elaine was a devoted homemaker raising her family and loved reading, berry picking, rock hunting, the outdoors and spending time with her grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, Elaine is preceded in death by her siblings Leon Kisro and Violet Pedrin; brother-in-law’s Gerald Pedrin and Roger Young.

Survivors include her loving daughters Erica Kolinski (Aaron Tuttle) and Jennifer Reed (Shane Caswell) all of Seney; grandchildren Ty Reed, Kaydence Reed and Sebastian Sawyer; siblings Bertha (Kenneth) Lewis of Newberry and Virginia “Ginger” Young of Newberry; best friend Sheryl Gilbert of Newberry; longtime companion Tom Smith of Cadillac; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Per request, cremation services were accorded with no pubic services scheduled at this time.  A gathering of family and friends celebrating the life of Elaine will take place in the summer of 2024.

Dan W. Moore Jr.
July 2, 1946 – March 28, 2024

Dan Wallace Moore Jr., 77, of Newberry, died Thursday morning March 28, 2024 at Helen Newberry Joy Hospital in Newberry.

Born July 2, 1946 in Columbus, Indiana, son of the late Dan Sr. and Mary Jo (Grider) Moore, Dan was a graduate of Hauser High School in Hope, Indiana.

On August 19, 1964, Dan enlisted into the United States Marine Corp. serving during the Vietnam War, a two-time recipient of the Purple Heart of Valor for injuries sustained in combat and honorably discharged on August 16, 1968, attaining the rank of Corporal.  Dan continued in the Marine Corp. Reserve stateside until April 28, 1970.

Following his discharge, Dan continued his education, graduating from Purdue University in LaFayette, Indiana with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Forestry.  Dan was formerly employed in the forest service, as a correction officer and later for the Department of Natural Resources Forest Resource Division and Eastern Upper Peninsula Trails Specialist with the Park and Recreation Division, retiring in 2015.

A resident of Newberry since 2001, Dan served in the National Guard for 18 years until his honorable discharge in 2001.  Dan was a member of the Bethel Community Church, life member of the American Legion Post #74 serving in the honor guard and adjutant, life member of the VFW, life member of the DAV and life member of the NRA.

Dan enjoyed fishing, hunting, reading, gardening and word puzzles.  In September of 2022, Dan participated in the UP Honor Flight, traveling to Washington, D.C.

In addition to his parents, Dan is preceded in death by his sibling Robert Moore.

Survivors include his loving wife, the former Lorna Kortman, whom he married February 24, 1989 in Ionia, Michigan; children Roy Moore of Richland, Washington, J.C. (Becka) Alcorn of Sault Ste. Marie, Michelle Moore of Sault Ste. Marie, Dan (Amanda) Moore II of Menominee Falls, Wisconsin and Amy (Dave) Spencer of Kinross; eight grandchildren; siblings Lynn Thayer of Hope, Indiana, Margaret Moore of Hope, Indiana, Tom Moore of Paoli, Indiana and Joe Moore of California; several nieces and nephews.

Per request, cremation services were accorded.  A celebration of life will be held Saturday April 20, 2024 at 11:00 am at the American Legion Post #74 in Newberry with Pastor Diann Bowler officiating.  Military honors conducted by the American Legion Post #74 and the United States Marine Corp. will follow the celebration of life at the Legion.  Interment will take place at Fort Custer National Cemetery in Augusta, Michigan.
