Stephanie D. Nyman
October 3, 1943 – February 7, 2023

Longtime Grand Marais resident, Stephanie Doris Nyman, 79, died Tuesday morning, February 7, 2023 at her residence in the comfort of her loving family and the care of North Woods Home Care and Hospice.

Born October 3, 1943 in Sault Ste. Marie, daughter of the late Wiley and Alberta (Jones) Early, Stephanie was a graduate of Sault Ste. Marie High School.  On February 8, 1975, Stephanie married Robert Nyman in Newberry.

Stephanie served as Postmaster for the Grand Marais Postal Service for 28 years until her retirement in December of 2005.  She was also a volunteer for the Burt Township Fire Department and an EMT for the Burt Township Ambulance Corp.

Stephanie enjoyed music, spending time with her family and friends, playing the organ and singing at home and at church.  She was passionate about her faith and her relationship with Jesus Christ.

In addition to her parents, Stephanie is preceded in death by her step-sister Frances Spokes and step-brother Gary Spokes.

Survivors include her loving husband of 47 years, Robert, of Grand Marais; sons Rob (Lucy) of Fritz Creek, Alaska and Greg (Christine) of Portland, Oregon; nine grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren; brother Wiley Early of Florida; step-brothers John Spokes and Mike Spokes both of Florida.

A gathering of family and friends will take place Saturday February 11, 2023 from 10:00 am to 11:00 am at the Grand Marais Mennonite Church.  A memorial service celebrating the life of Stephanie will follow at 11:00 am at the church with Phil Bontrager presiding.

Ronald Edward Brown
February 15, 1936 – February 8, 2023

Longtime Newberry resident, Ronald Edward Brown, 86, died Wednesday afternoon February 8, 2023 at his residence in the loving comfort of his family and the care of North Woods Home Care and Hospice.

Born February 15, 1936 in Newberry, son of the late Ed and Ethel (Carver) Brown, Ron was a 1954 graduate of Newberry High School.  On May 14, 1955, Ron married the former Betty Ann Justice in Detroit and moved to Newberry in 1956.

Ron was employed at the former Newberry Regional Mental Health Center starting as an Attendant Nurse, later as a Licensed Practical Nurse and retiring in the Security Department following 30 years of service.

Ron was a member and former Fire Chief for the Newberry Fire Department, founding member of the Luce County Ambulance Corp., member of the Newberry Elks Lodge and the Newberry Eagle Club.  Ron enjoyed the outdoors and hunting.

In addition to his parents, Ron is preceded in death by his wife Betty Ann on August 11, 2006; siblings Judy Justice and Robert Brown.

Survivors include his children Cherie (Dewey) Wilder of Benson, Arizona, Charlotte Mikuska of Newberry, Carolyn Brown of Lake Linden, Clifford (Loretta) Brown of Little Lake and Curt (Annie) Brown of Newberry; 18 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren; sister Ruth Ann Bayn of Battle Creek and sister-in-law Judy Brown of Newberry.

A gathering of family and friends celebrating the life of Ron took place Saturday, February 11, 2023 from 11:00 am until 1:00 pm at the Newberry Elks Lodge.  An Elks memorial service conducted by the members of the Newberry Elks Lodge was held at 11:00 am with the Fireman’s Last Call conducted by the members of the Newberry Fire Department at 1:00 pm.

Memorials may be directed to the Newberry Firemen’s Association, in care of John Wendt, 211 West John Street, Newberry, Michigan 49868 in his loving memory.
