Lela Jean Kabelman

June 20, 1960 – February 3, 2022

Lifelong area resident, Lela Jean Kabelman, 61, of Eckerman, died Thursday morning, February 3, 2022 at Helen Newberry Joy Hosptial.

Born June 20, 1960 in Newberry, daughter of the late Sonny and Avis (Saunders) Skeans, Lela married William Kabelman on April 21, 1984 in Dollar Settlement, Michigan.

Lela was employed contractor for the United States Postal Service and also was a cook at the former Coachlight Restaurant.  Lela was a member and elder of the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians, member of the Church in Eckerman and enjoyed bingo, gardening, picking mushrooms and horses.

In addition to her parents, Lela is preceded in death by her father and mother-in-law Kenneth Sr. (Marion) Kabelman; brother-in-law’s Kenneth “Pete” Kabelman, Donnie Earls and Steven Nichols; sister-in-law Laura Kabelman.

Survivors include her loving husband, William, of Eckerman; son William II of Eckerman; grandchildren Bethany Kabelman, Yasmin Abdi and Kamul Abdi; brother Sonny Jr. (Wendy) Skeans of Eckerman; sister-in-law’s Barbara Kabelman of Eckerman, Sheryl Kabelman of Eckerman, Elizabeth Nichols of Kinross and Carol (Ron) Harding of Eckerman; brother-in-law Don (Terry) Kabelman of Strongs; several nieces and nephews.

A gathering of family and friends celebrating the life of Lela will take place Saturday February 12, 2022 at 1:00 pm at the American Legion Post #393 in Hulbert with Pastor Ben Hopper officiating.  Interment will take place in the spring at the Hulbert Township Cemetery.

Helen Joyce Sevarns

May 20, 1934 – January 30, 2022

Lifelong Newberry resident, Helen Joyce Sevarns, 87, died Sunday evening January 30, 2022 at Golden Leaves Living Center.

Born May 20, 1934 in Newberry, daughter of the late Birney and Lalah (Whalen) Calkins, Helen attended school in Newberry.

Helen held various employments during her lifetime and retired from the food service department at the former Newberry Regional Mental Health Center.  Helen enjoyed sewing, bingo, casino gaming, shopping and spending time with family and friends.  Helen was a very caring, loving person who would do anything for anyone.

In addition to her parents, Helen is preceded in death by her husband’s Jonas Moses and Arthur “Junior” Severans; daughter Darlene Caswell; grandchildren Jeffrey Caswell and Joseph Moses; great-granddaughter Heather Caswell; siblings Maxine Smith, Clara Jacko, Mary Lou Jacko, Marjorie Archey, Loretta Calkins, Frank Calkins, Birney Calkins, George ” Dutch” Calkins and Ernie Calkins.

Survivors include her children Jake (Diane) Moses of Engadine, Matt (Curlene) Moses of Donnelly, Idaho, Ernie (Sue) Moses of Apache Junction, Arizona and Jonas (Ruth) Moses of Muskegon; 18 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; siblings Herman (Renee) Calkins of Kincheloe and Levi (Lois) Calkins of West Milford, West Virginia.

Graveside services will be held Friday May 20, 2022 (time to be determined) at the Forest Home Cemetery in Newberry.

The family of Helen Sevarns extends their gratitude to the staff of Golden Leaves Living Center and especially to Rena for their compassionate care.  Also a special thank you to Gail Holbrook.

Donald Lee Castle

March 21, 1937 – January 27, 2022

Donald Lee Castle, 84, of Engadine, died Thursday evening January 27, 2022 at War Memorial Hospital in Sault Ste. Marie.

Born March 21, 1937 in Flint, son of the late A. Jay and Harriet (Seeley) Castle, Donald was a high school graduate excelling in the sport of basketball.

During his lifetime, Donald was employed as a dairy farmer and also at Lloyd Flanders in Menominee, Michigan until his retirement in 2010.

A resident of Engadine since 2009, moving from Stephenson, Donald enjoyed farming, puzzles and watching football.

In addition to his parents, Donald is preceded in death by his daughter Leslie Ann Castle and brother Ron Castle.

Survivors include his children Lisa (Todd) Flatt of Engadine, Karen (Ken) Stuart of Rhinelander, Wisconsin, Brad Castle of Carney and Bryan (Shannon) Castle of Carney; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; extended family Wayne (Donita) Flatt of Engadine and Wayne Jr. (Laura) Flatt of Engadine; friends Don (Annette) Clark and Kevin (Lynn) Evans all of Engadine.

Per request, cremation services were accorded.  A gathering of family and friends will take place at a later date.
