On Monday, July 15 the Village of Newberry Department of Public Works (DPW) began a four-week project to resurface three blocks of Handy Street between E. McMillan Avenue and East Avenue C.

The project is a collaboration between the Village DPW, Norris Construction, and Fahrner Asphalt Sealers. DPW staff began removing all asphalt and hard surfaces from the street beginning on Monday. That work is expected to take two weeks.

Norris Construction will perform the leveling and site prep work beginning on July 29. Fahrner Asphalt Sealers will then apply emulsified asphalt and cover aggregate. The project is expected to be completed by Friday, August 9.

“We are excited to finally be able to improve the surface of this section of Handy Street,” said Village Manager Allison Watkins. “These three blocks have been an eyesore for quite some time, and we are looking forward to once again having this street be a smooth surface free of large dirt patches, broken asphalt sections, and areas of grass and weeds. We appreciate the patience shown by the residents of those three blocks.”

Property owners living along the project location were informed by a door-to-door flyer distribution the week of July 8.

Efforts will be made to minimize road closures during this timeframe however, portions of Handy Street will need to be blocked off as demolition and construction is taking place. The Village asks that motorists seek alternate routes when possible.
