A crash involving a semi-truck and a pickup truck on U.S.-2 Friday night, February 6, resulted in one fatality and four people injured.
Michigan State Police troopers from the Manistique Outpost were dispatched at approximately 9:16 p.m. to a report of a two vehicle crash on U.S.-2 near County Road 442 in Inwood Township.
According to a preliminary investigation, the pickup truck was traveling westbound and attempting to pass another vehicle in the passing lane when it lost control in whiteout conditions and on icy roadways. The pickup crossed into the eastbound lane and struck a semi-truck traveling in the opposite direction.
The pickup truck was occupied by two adults and three children. The front-seat passenger, a 38-year-old woman from Rapid River, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the pickup truck and one passenger were transported to Schoolcraft Memorial Hospital with minor injuries. A rear seat passenger sustained serious injuries and was taken to Schoolcraft Memorial Hospital before being airlifted by Guardian Flight to Children’s Wisconsin hospital in Milwaukee for further treatment. Another passenger was transported to UP Health System–Marquette for treatment of a head injury.
The driver of the semi-truck was not injured.
The crash remains under investigation. Authorities said drugs and alcohol are not believed to be factors.
Assisting at the scene were troopers from the Michigan State Police Gladstone Post, the MSP Aviation Unit, MSP North Region Communications Center dispatchers, Inwood Township Fire Department, Garden Township Fire Department, Tri-Star EMS, and the Manistique Public Safety Department.
