Both of Newberry’s varsity golf teams came out on top at a conference meet held at the Hiawatha Sportsman’s Club in Naubinway Friday afternoon. The meet also included teams from Engadine, Pickford, Brimley, and Maplewood Baptist. The contest was played on the 9-hole course.
The girls posted a team score of 229 and were paced by meet medalist Blair Maki, who shot a season low 49. Also posting season low scores for the Lady Indians were Sydney Duflo (56), Amelia Shanley (58), Ellory Curley (66), and Lily Rao (68). The strong team performance gave the Lady Indians a 20-stroke win over Engadine.
The Lady Eagles finished with a team score of 249, led by Sheyenne Nelson’s 54. Other Lady Eagle scorers included Claire Oven (58), Danielle Gehrke (66), and Hali Butkovich (77).
The boys were led by event medalist Oren Dewitt, who shot the low round of the day with a 39. He was closely followed by fellow freshman Jarrett Zellar (42). Oliver Sevarns posted a 48, with Levi Vruggink putting up a 50 and Spencer Neeb shooting 55. Quentin Magnusson had a 59 to round out the action for Newberry.
Engadine was the boys runner up. Ethan Edwards was the Eagles’ low man, shooting 45, one stroke better than Vern Loebach. Eli Germain (50), Coleman Loebach (56), and Gavin Maki (60), also helped earn the second-place finish.
Newberry’s golfers were home at the Newberry Country Club Tuesday and will be in Pickford for the EUP Conference Championship on Thursday for an 18-hole event starting at 10 a.m.
