At approximately 3:54 p.m. on Wednesday, January 28, the Newberry Fire Department was dispatched to a structure fire at 217 East Truman Boulevard in Newberry.
The home, owned by Cliff and Kim Shigwadja, was completely destroyed as a result of the blaze. All residents were able to exit the house, though it is reported that the family’s dog perished in the fire.
Garfield Township Fire Department of Engadine was requested for automatic mutual aid. Their department sent 12 firefighters along with four trucks.
Heavy smoke and wind made the fire difficult to extinguish.
According to Newberry Fire Department Secretary Tony Immel, firefighters were on scene for approximately five hours. “We are unsure of where the fire started,” he said. The cause of the fire is under investigation. Newberry Fire was called back to the scene the following morning at approximately 7:15 a.m. to extinguish hot spots.
The two departments were assisted by Luce County EMS, Michigan State Police Motor Carrier, the Luce County Sheriff’s Department and the Village of Newberry.
Following the loss of the home, Alyssa Rodriguez, granddaughter of the homeowners, has launched a GoFundMe campaign. As of press time, a total of $3,491 of the $5,000 goal has been raised. The link to the page is https://gofund.me/9a301a9c6.
There will be a benefit dinner with silent auctions and bake sale for the Shigwadja family at the Community Action Building on Saturday, February 28. The time has not yet been announced.
