The Luce County Sheriff’s Department has released information in regards to a fatal snowmobile accident just north of Newberry.

PRESS RELEASE – SNOWMOBILE FATALITY

Date/Time: 12-27-22 @ approx. 6:30pm

Venue: M123 and Charcoal Grade, McMillan Township Victim: 55 yr old female from Chesterfield, MI

Assisting departments: Luce County EMS, Newberry Fire Dept., Michigan State Police, Sault Ste Marie

Driver(s) information: Northbound vehicle- driven by a 56 yr old Newberry woman. Southbound vehicle- driven by a 57 yr old Newberry man.

Description: A snowmobile operated by a 55 yr old female was attempting to cross M123 from Charcoal Grade to go south into Newberry. The snowmobile pulled into the lane of traffic of a northbound vehicle which was unable to stop before striking the snowmobile. The operator of the snowmobile was ejected off the machine into the southbound lane of travel. The operator of the snowmobile was then struck by a southbound vehicle who did not see the victim lying in the roadway.  The snowmobile operator was taken to Helen Newberry Joy Hospital by Luce County EMS where she was pronounced deceased from her injuries.

Alcohol/Drugs suspected: No

Disposition: Pending further investigation. Name of victim being withheld pending contact of next of kin.
