Despite frigid temperatures on Saturday, Newberry’s Christmas Under the Lights event was a big success with a large number of adults and children bundled up but enjoying the holiday spirit.

Newberry’s annual Christmas celebration, now organized by a committee of residents and organizations, brought the event back to downtown Newberry, where it had been held historically highlighting the towns famed Christmas decorations.

Events were spread over four days from Thursday, December 11, through Sunday, December 14, included family crafts at the 4-H office, a free community dinner at the American Legion, matinees at Tahqua-Land Theatre, Santaland at the Elks, specials from local businesses, live music by Newberry High School alumnus Michelle Chenard, kids’ games, and the Parade of Lights.

The parade stepped off at 5 p.m. on Saturday and featured about 15 entries. There was a total of $1,000 in cash prizes for the top three floats with the best use of theme. First place: $500 went to the Newberry Elks Lodge #1705; second place: was Peninsula Pointe Dance, winning $300; and third place, winning $200, was Jen Dzelak Pet Grooming.

The parade escorted Santa and Mrs. Claus into town to meet with the local youngsters. After the Newberry Fire Department dropped off Santa and Mrs. Claus, the duo turned on the Christmas Tree lights at Renze Ford parking lot.

They spent the rest of the evening visiting with children.

Several bonfires were burning along Newberry Avenue to provide heat.

A number of historical photos of past Christmas events from the collections of Sterling McGinn and Jim Dwyer were displayed in the windows of the Newberry News office.

The events were sponsored by numerous local businesses and organizations.
