The Christmas in the Village three-day event last weekend in Newberry kicked off the holiday season. The event began with a free community dinner on Friday, December 13 at the American Legion Post 74. Over 150 residents enjoyed a ham dinner together.

On Saturday, December 14, the movie Elf was shown at the TahquaLand Theatre and Newberry’s North Pole, where kids could visit with Santa and Mrs. Claus, took place at the Legion. There was also craft making and cookie decorating for kids, and 140 kids received teddy bears provided by the Newberry Fire Department.

Approximately 290 attended Newberry’s North Pole. From noon – 4 p.m., Highline Internet offered an event to wrap Christmas presents for residents. Other Newberry businesses offered sales and specials that afternoon.

The “Parade of Lights” themed parade traveled north from the American Legion on Newberry Avenue to Rahilly’s IGA. Pleasant Moose Lodge took first place for their float, winning $500. Flatt’s Greenhouse came in second and Rahilly’s IGA was third, earning $300 and $200, respectively.

On Sunday, December 15, Tahqua-Land Theatre gave a free showing of the movie Grinch, with 130 people in attendance.

Newberry’s Christmas in the Village event was organized by a group representing local organizations and businesses and was sponsored by a number of businesses and organizations.
