Joseph Vincent, Life Scout in Newberry’s BSA Troop 130, is one step closer to becoming an Eagle Scout with the completion of his Eagle Scout project, sponsoring a Feeding America truck and helping with distribution on July 24.

An Eagle Scout project is undertaken by a Scout to show leadership and organizational skills while benefiting their community. Joseph chose to sponsor a Feeding America truck as he has seen the need for making sure that Feeding America can continue to be available to the Newberry Community.

“I know that poverty and food insecurity is a big issue in Luce County,” said Joseph. “I also know that our community works together to help each other out.”

Joseph sent letters asking for donations and also coordinated a can drive to raise funds.

Pastor Kyle Kuehl, director of the Newberry Area Ministerial Association (NAMA) said that the nearly $1,600 Joseph raised, “will more than pay for the food in the Feeding America truck for the month.” Kuehl stated that NAMA budgets about $16,000 a year for the monthly food distributions.

This month, with the help of the volunteers, over 400 boxes of food were distributed in just a few hours.

Joseph thanks all those that donated cans and those businesses and individuals that donated: McMillan Lodge #400 F & AM, Pickleman’s Total One-Stop, Newberry Motors, Oswald’s Bear Ranch and Lori Stokes, Chris and Jessica Cox for the use of their garage for returnable cans, and Scouts Tevye and Thaddeus Cox for helping sorting and returning the cans.
