Of all the places I chose to paint this fall, this place is one of my favorites to paint and fish.
It’s a destination that provides me with an endless source of inspiration, but also an opportunity to catch all kinds of fish – from perch to pike, coho salmon and steelhead.
But most importantly, whitefish. That also explains why I’m the only one out here. Most of those species of fish are caught in the spring right after ice-out.
An interesting feature to the pier is that you can park and walk 10 feet and start fishing, or walk the cement breaker wall out and over the rocks to be out into the big lake in a matter of minutes. I’m carrying all my fishing and painting stuff. It’s really quite a workout!
The one thing you’ll notice about this fall painting is it is totally void of the typical fall colors that are exploding right behind me. It’s really hard to tell what time of the year it is out here. I’ve been joined by a father and his boys, which I included out on the end of the pier.
Well, as my luck would have it, I’ve only caught a couple of perch, which I tossed back, but I did go home with this fall painting of the Grand Marais pier!
