Three eighth grade students from Engadine Consolidated Schools have been named local winners in the 54th annual America & Me Essay contest, which is sponsored by Farm Bureau Insurance. The topic this year was “My Personal Michigan Hero”.
Engadine’s participation in the essay contest was sponsored by Farm Bureau Insurance Agent Tracy Germain of Engadine.
Sophia Stephenson took first place for Engadine with her essay, and schoolmates Kali Santimaw and Kate Kovar took second and third, respectively. All three received award certificates. As first place winner, Sophia’s name will be engraved on a plaque on permanent display at the school.
Sophia’s essay now advances to the state level competition, from which the top 10 essays in Michigan will be selected. The top 10 statewide winners will be announced in April, and each will receive a plaque, medal, and cash award of $1,000. Each school will also receive a $1,000 and an additional $500 because a Farm Bureau Insurance Agent sponsored the school.
The traditional America & Me Essay Contest Awards Day is set for Wednesday, May 17 in Lansing. The top 10 students and their teachers will be invited to participate in a day of recognition.
