Grand Rapids, Mich. — Lisa Garrett, a long-time breastfeeding advocate and Senior Breastfeeding Peer Counselor with LMAS District Health Department, has been awarded the Breastfeeding Peer of the Year for the Upper Peninsula Region of Michigan. The award was presented on September 23, 2025, during the Michigan WIC Peer Update held in Grand Rapids.
Garrett received the honor from Dionne Moore-Smith, RD, IBCLC, Breastfeeding Coordinator for Michigan WIC. She was nominated by Danica Howard, one of the Upper Peninsula Regional Lactation Consultants for Michigan WIC, who highlighted Garrett’s tireless efforts, kindness, dedication, commitment, and the encouragement she consistently provides to both clients and fellow peers.
Numerous reports from families and colleagues emphasized the positive impact Garrett has made throughout the region.
Earlier in the year, Garrett was recognized for her participation in a Question-and-Answer Panel during a Senior Peer Training held in early spring. A formal thank-you gift was later presented to her by Linda Marshal at the Regional Peer Counselor Training in Negaunee on November 13, 2025.
Garrett has served LMAS for nine years, continually expanding her knowledge and skills through educational opportunities and professional certifications. In addition to her Lactation Counselor and Educator (LCE) credentials, she also holds a Senior Breastfeeding Peer certification. Serving families across the region, Garrett travels monthly to all four LMAS office locations, providing in-person breastfeeding support. She can be reached by work cell phone at 906-450-2388 (call or text), or through any LMAS office during business hours.
Reflecting on her work, Garrett shared that she “enjoys working with and supporting each and every mom and baby, helping them feel successful and connecting them with the resources and education they need.”
