The director of the Luce County Animal Shelter said she was overwhelmed with gratitude this week after a Michigan snowmobile group delivered a large donation of pet supplies, toys and cash to help care for local animals.

Shelter Director Gloria Caswell said members of the Hooligan Sledders selected the shelter as the beneficiary of their latest Dice Run, a charitable event in which the group collects and donates items to a chosen organization.

Caswell said the group arrived with truckloads of pet food, toys and other supplies, along with financial contributions.

“They are the kindest people,” Caswell said, estimating the donations were worth thousands of dollars. “We are so thankful for the donations from these generous animal-loving people.”

Mike Nolan, a member of the Hooligan Sledders, said the group was eager to support the shelter after learning about its mission.

“The group was excited to help, knowing that those animals that have been discarded or forgotten have a great staff and program to care for them until they get their forever home,” Nolan said. “A little hooligan help can make a huge impact, and we were happy to embrace them. We hope we made an impact and hope the shelter can continue what we view as God’s work.”

Caswell said additional donations of pet food and supplies had also arrived in the days leading up to the event, including packages sent through Amazon and Chewy by supporters who wanted to contribute.

She noted the shelter relies heavily on community support to continue caring for animals awaiting adoption.

For a small rural shelter serving Luce County, Caswell said, the unexpected generosity from groups like the Hooligan Sledders helps ensure animals receive proper care while they wait for permanent homes.

“We are just so thankful,” she said.
