Helen Newberry Joy Hospital and Healthcare Center (HNJH) proudly reflects on a year defined by care, community involvement, and meaningful partnerships across Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. From facility improvements and ongoing support programs to seasonal events and community outreach, 2025 demonstrated HNJH’s continued commitment to serving patients and neighbors alike.

Starting the year with growth and support
HNJH began the year by reopening its newly renovated pharmacy and Coumadin Clinic, enhancing access to medication services and improving the patient experience. Throughout the year, the hospital also supported community blood drives and continued hosting its Parkinson’s Disease Support Group, held monthly to provide connection and support for individuals and caregivers.

HNJH also proudly supported the DAISY Award Program, recognizing nurses for extraordinary compassion and patient care. The program was highlighted in April as part of HNJH’s ongoing commitment to celebrating its nursing staff.

Spring and summer community engagement
Community connection was front and center during the spring and summer months. In May, HNJH hosted its first-ever Women’s Resource Fair in Curtis, welcoming nearly 30 vendors offering healthcare, wellness, and lifestyle services. The event was met with strong community support and will return on May 16, 2026.

In June, HNJH partnered with Together With Veterans Upper Peninsula and the Michigan Center for Rural Health to host Veterans Resource Fairs, connecting veterans with employment, education, healthcare, housing, and family services. The hospital also supported veterans by donating funds to provide gas cards distributed at the fair.

July marked the completion of renovations at the Gibson Family Health Clinic, celebrated with a ribbon-cutting and open house for the community. That same month, residents of Golden Leaves Senior Living Community enjoyed Independence Day festivities, and the HNJH Foundation 15th Annual Golf Outing raised a record amount for the Health Careers Scholarship Program. The annual Run for Joy 5K and Walk in August wrapped up the summer, supporting athletics programs at Tahquamenon Area Schools and Engadine Consolidated Schools.

Fall outreach and community support
During the fall, HNJH participated in a variety of community-focused initiatives, including Pay It Forward Friday in memory of Marissa Lasslett, the Dig Pink Game in Engadine supporting breast cancer awareness, and the Walk for Warmth, which raised funds for heating assistance for families in need.

HNJH also supported the Neighbors Helping Neighbors Community Food Drive, participated in the Luce County Community Resource Fair, hosted a Craft Silent Auction, and gathered the community for Purse Bingo at the American Legion in Newberry to benefit Golden Leaves Living Center.

In November, HNJH honored veterans with a Veterans Day Flag Dedication Ceremony and joined rural communities nationwide in celebrating National Rural Health Day.

Closing out the year with community safety

In December, HNJH partnered with LMAS District Health Department and Luce County Communities That Care to install a free Narcan distribution box inside the hospital, expanding access to life-saving overdose prevention resources for the community.

Looking ahead
Throughout 2025, Helen Newberry Joy Hospital remained dedicated to improving access to care, strengthening community partnerships, and supporting the health and well-being of the region. HNJH looks forward to building on this momentum in the year ahead.
