The Annual Kids’ Tackle Party, a hometown favorite event, returns for its 70th year this month and will put fishing gear in the hands of local youth on Saturday, April 18.

The event will take place at Tahquamenon Area Schools J. L. DeCook Gymnasium. Every child aged 14 and under will receive a free piece of fishing and outdoor equipment. There will also be kids’ games, raffles, and a hotdog dinner.

Originally organized by the former Tahquamenon Sportsmen’s Club, the event was taken over in 2025 by the Luce County Communities that Care Coalition with a subcommittee representing individuals from the health department and interested community members.

Last year’s event was a great success seeing more than 300 children in attendance. The program could not continue without the support of the community. The committee is still seeking monetary contributions and donations of fishing equipment, especially youth rods and reels. Donations can be dropped off at or mailed to: LMAS District Health Department, Attn: Luce County CTC – Tackle Party 14150 Hamilton Lake Road Newberry, Mich., 49868.

Doors will open at 4:30 p.m., and registration and activities begin then. The drawings for fishing equipment will start at 6 p.m.

There is no cost to attend the event, however adult meal tickets will cost $5 per person.
