To honor our Nation’s fallen heroes, local American Legion Posts and communities have prepared programs to be held on Memorial Day, Monday, May 26.

The American Legion Post 74 of Newberry will hold two ceremonies: one in Newberry, and the other in McMillan.

In Newberry, the program will begin at 9 a.m. in front of the VFW memorial at Tahquamenon Area Schools. There will be a brief ceremony before the Color Guard will parade to Forest Home Cemetery.

The remainder of the program will be conducted at the cemetery beginning at 9:30 a.m.

The M.C. will be Post 74 member Bill Inman. Prayers will be offered by Pastor Kyle Kuehl of Trinity, Bethlehem, and Grace Lutheran churches.

The speaker of the day will be retired colonel and Naubinway resident Ivan Darling. Student speakers will be Craig Whalen and Matti Krupla. Performing the Star-Spangled Banner is Delaney Bliss.

The grave of Hugh Allan MacInnes will be decorated, and a rifle salute performed by the American Legion Post 74 Honor Guard will follow.

Taps will be sounded by Post 74 Bugler Sterling McGinn and echoed by Nicole Gustafson.

The program will be repeated at the Columbus Township Cemetery in McMillan at approximately 10:45 a.m.

In the event of inclement weather, the ceremony will be held in the big hall at the American Legion Post 74 of Newberry and inside the Columbus Township Hall in McMillan.
