On Sunday, November 10 and Monday, November 11, local communities have planned events and ceremonies to honor Veteran’s Day.

The Newton Township Historical Society is holding a dedication ceremony for their Veteran’s Memorial, located next to the Gould City Museum on South Gould City Road. The event will take place at 1 p.m. on Sunday, November 10.

The new memorial is a brick pathway leading from a metal archway to a large granite stone with a memorial plaque. The bricks in the pathway were donated by Newton Township residents and friends, and are engraved with the names of area veterans, their branch of service, etc.

American Legion Post 290 of Engadine will perform a memorial service at the ceremony. Refreshments will be served at the Gould City Town Hall following the ceremony.

Tahquamenon Area Schools has announced that their annual Veteran’s Day program will take place in the big hall at the American Legion Post 74 of Newberry at 10 a.m.

The program has been moved to the American Legion because the school’s gymnasium floor is being resurfaced and the high school auditorium is no longer in use.
The program will feature students from the school.

The American Legion Post 74 of Newberry is offering a Veteran’s Day special from 1 to 7 p.m., or until gone, which will also take place on Monday. The meal will include a patty melt sandwich served with potato chips and a pickle spear. The meal is free to Veterans and $10 for all others.

Engadine Consolidated Schools will hold their annual Veteran’s Day program in the gymnasium on Monday, November 11 at 1 p.m.

Three Lakes Academy in Curtis will hold a Veteran’s Day program on Monday, November 11 at 10:30 a.m.

Another Newberry event that is taking place on Saturday, November 9, is the Annual Veteran’s Appreciation Banquet at the American Legion Post 74. The banquet, which starts at 6 p.m., will feature the awarding of the Luce County Veteran of the Year, and a Posthumous Veteran of the Year Award. The event is held by the Luce County Veteran Services Office.

Whitefish Township Community Schools will hold a Veterans Day event beginning at 10 a.m. on November 11 at the school. Students have prepared songs for the area veterans as well as some special giveaways and a guest speaker. The Hulbert American Legion will be in attendance to perform a flag lowering ceremony and 21-gun salute to honor those lost. Lunch will follow. Anyone who wants to attend is asked to RSVP by calling (906) 492-3353 or emailing Miss Mills at jmills-wts@eupschools.org so they know how many people to prepare for.
